What are some typical challenges faced by a rack stack technician in a data center environment?

A Rack Stack technician often manages multiple priorities, such as installing new hardware, troubleshooting physical connections, and ensuring proper cable management in tight or busy rack spaces. Adhering to precise documentation and labeling standards is crucial for maintaining system organization and ease of future maintenance. Technicians may encounter time-sensitive situations when supporting rapid server deployments or upgrades, especially during peak infrastructure changes. These challenges require adaptability, attention to detail, and effective communication with IT engineers and network administrators to ensure smooth operation and minimal disruption.

What is a rack stack?

A Rack Stack job involves installing, organizing, and securing server racks in data centers or IT environments. Technicians are responsible for mounting hardware, ensuring proper cable management, and maintaining airflow for optimal performance. This role requires physical labor, attention to detail, and knowledge of networking equipment. Rack stack professionals often work closely with engineers to ensure efficient deployments and maintenance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the rack stack position?

To thrive as a Rack Stack, you need a solid understanding of data center operations, basic networking, and hardware installation, often supported by experience in IT infrastructure or a relevant technical certification (like CompTIA or Cisco). Job description

AMAX is an IT infrastructure and advanced computing solutions company serving enterprise and OEM customers with customized systems, from servers and workstations to rack solutions and HPC/GPU-accelerated infrastructure. Our work sits at the intersection of hardware, infrastructure, and advanced computing, helping customers deploy systems built for demanding technical environments.

In this role, you will help strengthen the network foundation behind a cloud-like infrastructure environment while working closely with teams responsible for infrastructure, security, and operations. This is an opportunity to contribute to a hands-on engineering function with meaningful ownership, supporting both the underlying platform and the operational needs that keep the datacenter running smoothly.

Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and operate the on-prem network infrastructure underpinning our cloud-like environment
  • Own VLAN design, routing, firewall policy, and load balancer configuration across the datacenter
  • Manage network segmentation and access control in support of security and compliance needs
  • Build and maintain configuration-as-code for network devices and infrastructure using Ansible (and Terraform/Terragrunt where applicable)
  • Collaborate closely with the infrastructure/DevSecOps engineer(s) on shared tooling, monitoring, and automation
  • Support and monitor network health using Prometheus, Grafana, and Alertmanager
  • Troubleshoot network issues across routing, switching, firewalls, and load balancing
  • Provide general datacenter support for customers co-located in the HostMax datacenter - things like cabling, hardware swaps, rack/stack work, and basic troubleshooting
  • Participate in business-hours (M-F) on-call rotation for customer and network support
  • Participate in an SDLC/Scrum-based workflow, using Jira and Confluence for planning and documentation
  • Help define network standards, runbooks, and best practices as the team and topology grow
  • Take on increasing ownership of network architecture and scope as the team matures and responsibilities shift from the infra engineer(s) to this role

Requirements

  • Solid working knowledge of networking fundamentals: VLANs, routing, firewalls, and load balancers
  • Hands-on experience with configuration-as-code for infrastructure using Ansible
  • Exposure to on-prem/datacenter network operations
  • Proficiency with Git and standard version control workflows
  • Willingness to do hands-on datacenter/hardware work (cabling, rack/stack, hardware troubleshooting) in addition to network engineering
  • Prior colocation/datacenter smart-hands experience

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with containerized environments (Docker, Kubernetes) and how networking applies within them
  • Experience with Prometheus, Grafana, and Alertmanager (or equivalent monitoring stacks)
  • Familiarity with HashiCorp tooling (Vault, Boundary) as it relates to network access and secrets
  • Familiarity with Keycloak or other identity/access management platforms
  • Networking certifications (e.g., CCNA or equivalent) or formal networking coursework
  • Familiarity with Scrum, SDLC practices, and tools like Jira/Confluence (admin experience a plus)
  • Experience with Terraform/Terragrunt
  • Prior experience joining or building an infrastructure/network team from scratch

Benefits

  • Competitive salary of 120000-150000 USD annually
  • Medical Insurance
  • Dental Insurance
  • Vision Insurance
  • 401(k)
  • Flexible spending account
  • Commuter benefits
  • Disability insurance
