Job Description

Job Title: Accessibility Liaison

Division: Operations
Department: Accessibility
Reports to: Accessibility Manager
Position Type: Unpaid Volunteer
Location: Remote with occasional in-person meetings (location-dependent), expected to be on-site during convention dates, including the day before and the day after for setup and teardown.

About Anthro SoCal

Anthro SoCal is a community-driven convention celebrating furry fandom through art, performance, gaming, and social connection. Our success depends on the dedication and enthusiasm of our volunteer team. Anthro SoCal was formally known as Another Furry Con in 2024-2025.

Position Overview

The Accessibility Liaison is an active, on-the-floor advocate for inclusivity and crowd safety, ensuring that the convention's main events, panels, and high-traffic areas remain completely accessible to all attendees. In this staff-level role, you will serve as the mobile arm of our accessibility department. Your primary responsibilities involve setting up designated seating areas, managing specialized accessibility queues at events, and providing direct, on-the-spot navigation assistance. If you are a proactive, physically active communicator who can manage lines calmly and wants to make sure every attendee has a fair and comfortable experience, this role is for you.

Time Commitment
  • Year-round: None
  • As convention approaches: Attend online staff meetings and trainings when requested
  • Convention weekend: On-site presence is required with flexible hours. Must plan to work the minimum volunteer hour requirement posted on the website
  • Pre and post-convention: On-site presence is required to assist with setup and teardown activities the day before and the day after the event
Key Responsibilities

Your shift will center around active floor management, accessibility queue setup, and direct crowd interaction:

  • Line Management & Queue Setup: Physically set up and manage dedicated accessibility lines for events, major panels, and popular attractions, ensuring wait areas are orderly, clear of obstructions, and low-stress
  • Accessible Seating Coordination: Assist in organizing, designating, and monitoring priority seating areas, helping attendees with mobility devices or specific needs find comfortable accommodations
  • On-the-Floor Guest Assistance: Move actively throughout the convention space to greet attendees, answer real-time logistics questions, offer navigation support, and guide guests to ADA-compliant pathways or elevators
  • Crowd Control Collaboration: Work with the Safety and Programming teams to ensure priority entry flows smoothly and transition windows run on schedule
Qualifications

Required:

  • Punctuality & Active Floor Presence: Strict adherence to your scheduled shift times and assignments. Frontline crowd support requires reliable, on-time coverage to prevent queue confusion
  • Physical Adaptability: Comfort with standing and walking for the duration of a multi-hour shift, with the physical ability to drop down to a low level (such as sorting floor markers or taping lines) and return to a standing position easily
  • Assertive Hospitality: Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills to manage large crowds and direct line traffic firmly, yet with absolute warmth, empathy, and professionalism
  • Problem-Solving: The ability to "think on your feet" to rapidly resolve line overflow, address seating shortages, or clear blocked pathways under high-pressure live event conditions

Preferred:

  • Fandom & Convention Knowledge: An understanding of convention culture, community dynamics, and the unique rush of high-density fan events, helping you anticipate crowd bottlenecks and attendee needs
  • Crowd Management or Event Experience: Prior experience working in line management, ushering, event security, hospitality, or direct accessibility support roles
  • De-escalation Skills: The ability to stay completely calm, patient, and reassuring when helping anxious, overwhelmed, or frustrated attendees navigate dense crowds
What We Offer

While this is an unpaid volunteer position, we provide:

  • Free convention membership and staff perks
  • Staff hospitality (meals/snacks during your shifts at-con)
  • Exclusive staff events and social opportunities
  • Recognition in convention materials
  • Experience in event management and team leadership
  • A supportive, creative community environment
  • References and recommendation letters upon request

Anthro SoCal is committed to creating an inclusive environment. We welcome volunteers of all backgrounds, experiences, and skill levels. All volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.
