Quality Engineer Assistant information

What does a quality engineer assistant do?

A Quality Engineer Assistant supports quality engineers in ensuring that products or services meet established standards of quality, reliability, and performance. Their tasks often include assisting with inspections, collecting and analyzing data, preparing reports, and helping to implement quality control processes. They also help investigate product issues, document findings, and recommend improvements. This role is essential in maintaining compliance with industry regulations and contributing to continuous improvement efforts within the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a quality engineer assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Quality Engineer Assistant, you need a basic understanding of quality control principles, data analysis, and familiarity with manufacturing or production processes, usually supported by a relevant technical diploma or degree. Experience with tools such as statistical analysis software, quality management systems (QMS), and ISO standards is often required. Attention to detail, strong organization, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These capabilities ensure accurate quality assurance processes, support compliance, and help maintain high product standards within a team environment.

What are some common challenges faced by quality engineer assistants in maintaining product standards?

Quality Engineer Assistants often encounter challenges such as balancing tight production schedules with thorough inspection processes, adapting to frequently updated quality standards, and effectively communicating issues between production teams and quality engineers. They must pay close attention to detail to identify defects early and maintain accurate records of quality checks. Successful assistants are proactive in problem-solving and work collaboratively with various departments to ensure continuous improvement in product quality.

What is the difference between Quality Engineer Assistant vs Quality Control Inspector?

The Quality Engineer Assistant primarily supports quality engineering activities, focusing on process improvements and documentation, while the Quality Control Inspector conducts physical inspections to ensure product quality. Both roles are essential in maintaining quality standards but differ in responsibilities and focus areas.

Do quality engineer assistants make good money?

Quality engineer assistants typically earn a salary that is lower than fully qualified quality engineers but still competitive within manufacturing and industrial sectors. Their pay can vary based on experience, certifications, and location, with entry-level positions often starting around $40,000 to $50,000 annually. Developing skills in quality tools like Six Sigma or ISO standards can improve earning potential.

This position will support the Quality Manager and Quality Technicians with part inspection, documentation, process adherence, CMM programming, audits, PPAP documentation, and process improvements. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on Quality Engineer with machining experience who is comfortable working on the plant floor, programming and operating CMM equipment, identifying problems, and helping drive solutions in a growing manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities: Support the Quality Manager and Quality Technicians with daily quality activities. Perform part checking and inspection to verify product conformance. Support quality documentation and ensure established processes are followed and maintained.

Program and operate CMM equipment, primarily Hexagon/PC-DMIS. Take new parts and develop CMM programs to perform required measurements. Perform inspections using CMMs, micrometers, calipers, depth gauges, and other inspection equipment.

Review SPC data and identify potential quality issues or process trends. Perform gauge calibration and help maintain inspection equipment. Assist with internal and external quality audits, including audit preparation and execution.

Support technical documentation and maintain quality records. Assist with developing and maintaining work instructions for quality checks. Support PPAP documentation and process submissions.

Utilize quality tools including 8D, 5 Why, root cause analysis, PFMEA, PPAP, APQP, and FMEA. Identify quality and process issues and participate in root cause analysis and corrective actions. Work with production and quality teams to identify problems and implement improvements.

Help ensure the company's ERP/QMS processes are followed and maintained. Support continuous improvement initiatives using a "learn, use, improve" mentality. Communicate clearly with internal and external teams regarding quality issues and requirements.

Help direct quality technicians and other team members as needed to accomplish quality goals. Work closely with production teams in a hands-on manufacturing environment. Support quality activities across approximately 16 production cells.

Help maintain quality standards as the company continues to introduce new parts, equipment, and automation. Support quality processes involving CNC machining, grinding, turning, milling, and robotic automation. Work with a variety of large machined components, primarily rough castings used for heavy-duty and semi-truck applications.

Contribute to reducing scrap and improving customer satisfaction through proactive quality management. Work on multiple quality projects and priorities in a fast-paced, growing manufacturing environment. Requirements: High school diploma or GED required.

3-5+ years of Quality Engineering experience, preferably in a machine shop or machining environment. Experience setting up and programming CMMs. Experience with Hexagon/PC-DMIS preferred; experience with another CMM programming platform will also be considered.

Strong CMM programming and operation experience. Ability to program a CMM for new parts and determine the appropriate measurements needed. Strong understanding of GD&T and blueprint reading.

Experience using inspection equipment such as micrometers, calipers, depth gauges, and similar measurement tools. Experience with machining processes, including CNC machining, turning, milling, or grinding. Experience with quality audits and technical documentation.

Experience working with IATF or ISO quality systems. Experience with 8D, 5 Why, root cause analysis, PFMEA, PPAP, APQP, and/or FMEA. Ability to perform SPC review and understand quality data.

Ability to communicate clearly with internal and external teams. Comfortable directing quality team members and helping accomplish quality goals. Detail-oriented with strong time management and follow-through.

Self-starter who can identify problems and move forward with solutions. Comfortable working on the manufacturing floor rather than remaining in an office-based role. Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs., stand for extended periods, and perform repetitive tasks

Preferred: Bachelor's or Associate's degree in Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, or a related discipline. Experience running PPAPs from start to finish. Strong PFMEA experience.

Experience with HAAS and Okuma mills and lathes. Understanding of robotics and PLCs. Experience with pressure testing.

Lean manufacturing experience or a strong Lean mindset. Six Sigma experience or Green Belt/Black Belt certification. Experience in an automotive or automotive supplier environment.

Experience working with large machined components or heavy-duty vehicle parts. Experience working in a rapidly growing manufacturing environment. Experience supporting or implementing automation in a manufacturing environment.

Experience with quality systems, process improvement, and customer quality requirements. Benefits Overview: Up to $90K base salary, depending on experience. Up to 15% annual bonus based on company, facility, and individual performance.

8 paid holidays. Additional benefits available through the company's benefits package. Opportunity for CMM, audit, and other professional training.
