Job Summary
The Student Support Generalist advances student growth by helping clarify academic, professional, and personal goals. This role supports students across all aspects of campus life, including student activities and organizations, support services, crisis management, student conduct, and leadership development. The position provides in-person assistance, evaluates student needs, and connects individuals with appropriate University resources. The Student Support Generalist uses strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address student concerns and provide consultation to students, faculty, staff, and families. The role also involves extensive outreach to the campus community to support student organizations, co-curricular programs, and large-scale events that enhance the student experience and recognize student achievement.
The Student Support Generalist maintains knowledge of current higher education practices and University policies to ensure effective and responsive student services. Beyond direct student support, the role contributes to the continuous improvement of internal processes and operational efficiency. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Students at Purdue University in Indianapolis, with collaborative ties to Purdue West Lafayette leadership, this position is part of a team overseeing all aspects of Student Life, including residential programs, student governance, counseling, crisis response, student conduct, health and wellness services, and recreation. This position requires occasional evening and weekend work.

Education and Experience:
Required:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Two (2) years of professional experience providing direct student service in higher education

Preferred:
  • Master's degree in higher education, college student development, student affairs counseling, student personnel services, or a related field

Qualified candidates will need:

  • Strong rapport-building and interpersonal communication (written, oral, and presentation)
  • Sound judgment, discretion, and confidentiality in sensitive situations
  • Proven organizational skills with ability to manage multiple tasks in a busy setting
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures related to student services
  • Cultural competence and ability to effectively serve a diverse student body
  • Collaboration and relationship-building with departments, student groups, and colleagues
  • Understanding of college-student development theories and current research
  • Demonstrated commitment to student success and engagement
  • Program planning and implementation for outreach and educational initiatives
  • Clear and audience-appropriate communication; adherence to ADA, FERPA, and institutional guidelines
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Access, Excel, Outlook)
  • Flexibility regarding assignments and schedule, including evenings/weekends
  • Ability to respond to after-hours crises with reliable transportation
