About the Role

We are excited to offer an opportunity to join our vibrant and innovative hybrid publishing team at Springer Nature as a Senior Publisher, working on a varied and prestigious portfolio of journals including Cell Biology. In joining the team, you would become part of one of the world's leading global scientific and medical publishers, with staff based in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. We have a fantastic opportunity for an individual with a passion for scientific advancement to develop their publishing career and work alongside some of the best researchers in their fields.

As a Senior Publisher, you will lead a vibrant portfolio of societyowned and proprietary journals within Life Sciences, driving growth through strategic development and selective acquisitions. You'll be proactive, creative, and datadriven in devising and executing journal plans, serve as the primary publishing contact for your titles, and collaborate closely with EditorsinChief, societies, and crossfunctional colleagues to deliver an excellent author and editor experience.

Responsibilities

Strategy & Growth

  • Lead the growth, development, and positioning of a portfolio of society and proprietary journals, aligned to portfolio/divisional goals.

  • Identify competitive opportunities, hot topics, and acquisition or launch opportunities; devise datadriven journal development plans.

Community & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build trusted relationships with EditorsinChief, Editorial Boards, and society partners; plan/facilitate effective board meetings.

  • Partner with editors to increase submissions, enhance visibility, and strengthen reputation (commissioning, collections, and content strategy).

  • Represent the portfolio at conferences/meetings; cultivate researcher relationships to support commissioning and brand advocacy.

Operations, KPIs & Reporting

  • Manage annual targets across submissions, publications, transfers, and turnaround times; track KPIs and implement corrective actions.

  • Coordinate crossfunctionally (production, marketing, data/analytics, editorial office, platforms/IT) to resolve workflow issues swiftly.

Editorial Excellence & Ethics

  • Monitor peerreview performance and manuscript flow; remove bottlenecks and improve turnaround.

  • Ensure transparent, professional author/reviewer communications (twobusinessday standard where applicable).

  • Apply COPE guidance and publisher policies on ethics, integrity, and research standards; oversee resolution of ethics, authorship, and policy questions.

Indexing, Visibility & Impact

  • Pursue inclusion in selective abstracting/indexing services where criteria are met.

  • Drive citation and usage growth through targeted content development and discoverability tactics.

Commercial & Contracting

  • Lead contract negotiations with external editors; apply working knowledge of P&L, forecasting, and commercial models.

  • Maintain accurate documentation (contracts, renewal timelines, honoraria, journal metadata) across internal and external systems.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

Essential

  • Educated to bachelor's degree level

  • Prior experience leading a journal portfolio

  • Experience managing society journals required

  • Experience partnering with EditorsinChief and Editorial Board Members

  • Understanding of publishing business models, including subscription, hybrid, and open access

  • Excellent communication and influencing skills

  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills

  • Strong organizational skills, with attention to detail

  • Proven ability to meet deadlines

  • Ability to adapt quickly to change

Desirable

  • Previous experience or demonstrated interest in the portfolio's subject matter

  • Be flexible, able to work in a multi-cultural environment and show a commercial/entrepreneurial spirit

US Annualized Base Salary Range: $95,000 - $110,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level, and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
