What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in public sector marketing?

To thrive in Public Sector Marketing, you need expertise in strategic communication, market research, and knowledge of government processes, often supported by a degree in marketing, communications, or public administration. Familiarity with digital marketing tools, CRM systems, and data analytics platforms is typically expected. Strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, and a keen understanding of public policy help professionals stand out in this field. These skills are crucial for effectively engaging stakeholders, promoting public initiatives, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

What are some unique challenges faced by marketers working in the public sector compared to the private sector?

Marketers in the public sector often navigate strict regulations, budget constraints, and complex approval processes that can slow campaign execution. They must also ensure all messaging is accessible and serves the public interest, balancing transparency with effectiveness. Collaboration with multiple departments and stakeholders is common, requiring strong communication and adaptability. These factors make public sector marketing both challenging and rewarding for professionals seeking to make a societal impact.

Common Search/ComparisonPublic Sector Marketing vs Nonprofit Marketing

Public Sector Marketing and Nonprofit Marketing share similarities in targeting community engagement and awareness. However, Public Sector Marketing focuses on government agencies and public institutions, often with stricter regulations and policies. Nonprofit Marketing centers on charitable causes and fundraising efforts. Both roles require strong communication skills and sector-specific knowledge, but their target audiences and organizational goals differ.

What is public sector marketing?

Public sector marketing refers to the strategies and activities used by government agencies, non-profits, and other public organizations to communicate with and engage their target audiences. Unlike private sector marketing, the goal is often to inform, educate, or encourage behavior change rather than sell products or services. Public sector marketers use various channels, such as social media, public relations, and community outreach, to build trust and promote programs or policies. This field requires understanding both marketing principles and the unique needs of the public sector.

Job description

About the Role

NinjaOne is growing, and we're looking for a highly skilled and motivated Public Sector Marketing Manager to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of driving growth in the public sector market, primarily within Federal sectors. You'll leverage your strategic marketing expertise to develop and execute high-impact campaigns that increase awareness, generate demand, and position NinjaOne's solutions as leaders in the space. A key part of this role will be building and activating channel and partner programs — collaborating with resellers, distributors, and strategic partners to extend our reach and accelerate pipeline in the public sector. As a key member of the marketing team, you'll work closely with cross-functional partners, channel teams, and the broader partner ecosystem to shape and influence NinjaOne's public sector strategy — making a real impact on the company's growth trajectory. We're seeking a dynamic, results-driven individual with a deep understanding of the public sector and experience marketing through and with channel partners to lead key initiatives that accelerate demand and support our rapid expansion in this critical market.

Location - We are flexible on remote working from home, if you are located in the USA and reside in one of the following states – MD or VA. We have physical offices in Austin, TX and Tampa, FL.

Travel Requirement - Up to 40% representing NinjaOne at key industry events, product launches, and customer engagements.

What You’ll be Doing
  • Develop and execute strategic marketing plans to drive growth in the public sector (Federal, State & Local Government, K12-Higher Education) by leveraging a mix of face-to-face, digital, email, content, and targeted campaigns — including channel and partner-led motions.
  • Identify and capitalize on trends and opportunities within the public sector to accelerate market penetration and demand generation, with a focus on scaling through channel and partner ecosystems.
  • Lead cross-functional teams and third-party agencies to create targeted messaging, content, and positioning that resonates with public sector stakeholders, channel partners, and resellers.
  • Build and nurture relationships with key internal stakeholders (sales, sales ops, marketing, channel teams) and external partners (resellers, distributors, vendors, associations) to ensure strategic alignment and campaign success.
  • Design and execute partner marketing programs — including MDF-funded campaigns, co-marketing initiatives, and enablement resources — to drive pipeline through the channel.
  • Analyze campaign performance across direct and channel-sourced pipeline, providing actionable insights to optimize future marketing efforts and increase ROI.
  • Develop and manage budgets for marketing campaigns, including partner and channel marketing funds, ensuring resources are allocated effectively and efficiently.
  • Represent NinjaOne at industry events and conferences, with 25%+ travel required, to enhance brand presence, generate leads, and strengthen partner relationships.
  • Work closely with sales teams and channel partners to ensure alignment and support the achievement of revenue targets.
  • Collaborate with extended marketing and channel teams to leverage best practices and optimize resources for the public sector market.
  • Provide regular updates and reports to senior management, highlighting marketing initiatives, channel contribution, and results.
  • Uphold brand consistency by adhering to company branding and messaging guidelines across all marketing materials, including partner-facing content.
  • Other duties as needed.
About You
  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in marketing, with a proven track record in public sector markets (specifically Federal), including experience marketing through channel partners and resellers.
  • Demonstrated expertise in developing and executing integrated marketing strategies across digital, content, email, face-to-face, and partner-led channels.
  • Strong understanding of public sector dynamics and the channel ecosystem, with the ability to identify growth opportunities and drive results through both direct and partner-led motions.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with internal teams (sales, marketing, channel) and external stakeholders (channel partners, resellers, distributors, vendors, associations).
  • Experience designing and managing partner marketing programs, including co-marketing campaigns, MDF allocation, and partner enablement initiatives.
  • Highly analytical, with a strong ability to measure and optimize campaign performance across direct and channel-sourced pipeline, and translate data into actionable insights.
  • Experience managing significant marketing budgets, including partner and channel marketing funds, ensuring effective allocation of resources to meet objectives and drive ROI.
  • Proven experience representing a company at industry events and generating qualified leads through effective networking, brand exposure, and partner engagement.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to lead cross-functional initiatives that drive alignment across sales, channel, and marketing teams.
  • You align with our values Curiosity, Integrity, Kindness, Humility, & Builders and are committed to creating an environment where these values flourish in our teams.
