Job Role Summary

The Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) Intern will support the Marion County Public Health Department (MCPHD) within the Public Health Administration Division. The PHEP programย is responsibleย forย establishingย local public health preparedness priorities,ย developing,ย maintaining, and testingย emergency response plans,ย coordinating preparedness and response efforts with local, state, andย federal partners,ย and managing public health emergencies,ย both natural and human-causedย throughout Marion County, Indiana.ย 

This internship provides hands-on experience in public health emergency preparedness. The intern willย assistย PHEP staff withย maintainingย operational readiness of emergency preparedness assets andย equipment, and willย contribute to planning, development, and implementation of a comprehensiveย emergency preparedness framework aligned with the National Incident Management System (NIMS).

Essential Duties
  • Support operational readiness and emergency response activities for the PHEP program.ย ย 
  • Assistย with preparation of reports, maintenance, and updating of emergency plans, standard operating procedures, and resource materials.ย ย 
  • Participate in PHEP program activities, includingย training, exercises, drills, and real-time publicย health response operations.ย 
  • Support procurement activities, including identifyingย appropriate itemsย for purchase, obtainingย vendor quotes, and compiling purchase orders.ย 
  • Assist the Logistics Manager with developing andย maintainingย inventory of emergency suppliesย and warehouse equipment.ย 
  • Support the development and execution of training and exercise activities aligned withย preparedness and response requirements.ย 
  • Perform otherย duties asย assigned to support PHEP programย objectives.ย 
Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Current undergraduate (junior or senior year) or graduate student in a relevant field (e.g., public health, emergency management, public administration, homeland security, or related discipline).ย ย

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • National familiarity with or certification in the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Incident Command System (ICS) preferred.ย ย 
  • Proficiencyย in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) or related software applications.ย 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skillsย ย 
  • Ability to remain calm and effective in high-pressure or emergency situations.ย ย 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.ย ย 
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask and manage competing priorities.ย ย 
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with diverse populations and partners.ย
