What is a PSA engineer?

A PSA Engineer, or Pressure Swing Adsorption Engineer, is a professional who designs, operates, and maintains PSA systems used to separate gases from a mixture under pressure. These engineers commonly work in industries such as energy, chemical production, and environmental engineering, where gas purification and separation are required. Their responsibilities include optimizing system performance, troubleshooting equipment, and ensuring safety and regulatory compliance. PSA Engineers also play a key role in improving efficiency and reducing operational costs.

What is the difference between Psa Engineer vs Psa Technician?

AspectPsa EngineerPsa Technician
CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering or related field, certifications in PSA systemsTechnical diploma or associate degree, specialized PSA system training
Work EnvironmentDesign, development, and troubleshooting of PSA systems, often in engineering labs or officesInstallation, maintenance, and repair of PSA units on-site or in industrial settings
Employer & IndustryManufacturers, engineering firms, industrial plantsIndustrial facilities, water treatment plants, gas production companies

The main difference between a Psa Engineer and a Psa Technician lies in their roles and responsibilities. Psa Engineers focus on designing, developing, and troubleshooting PSA systems, often requiring a degree in engineering. Psa Technicians handle installation, maintenance, and repair tasks, typically with technical training. Both roles are essential in industries utilizing PSA technology, but they differ in scope and level of technical expertise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PSA engineer?

To thrive as a PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) Engineer, you need a solid understanding of chemical engineering principles, gas separation processes, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation software (such as Aspen HYSYS), process control systems, and safety certifications like OSHA are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication help PSA Engineers excel in complex project environments. These competencies ensure safe, efficient design and operation of PSA systems, which are critical for applications in industries like energy, environmental technology, and manufacturing.

What are some common challenges PSA engineers face when integrating new automation systems into existing infrastructure?

One of the most common challenges for PSA Engineers is ensuring seamless integration of new process automation systems with legacy equipment and software. This often requires detailed analysis of both old and new technologies, troubleshooting compatibility issues, and minimizing downtime during transitions. PSA Engineers must collaborate closely with IT, operations, and maintenance teams to develop phased implementation plans, conduct thorough testing, and provide training to ensure a smooth handover. Effective communication and adaptability are key to overcoming these integration hurdles.

Job description

The Probabilistic Safety Analysis (PSA) Engineer II supports Holtec's advanced reactor development by contributing to risk-informed safety analysis efforts for the SMR-300 program. This role is part of a multidisciplinary engineering team responsible for supporting design, safety analysis, and licensing of next-generation nuclear technology. The position focuses on developing and maintaining PSA models and thermal-hydraulic analyses, while translating technical findings into actionable insights that support safe and effective reactor design.
Location: Camden, NJ (On-site) - Relocation assistance available!
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Develop and maintain PRA logic models and supporting thermal-hydraulic analyses used for risk quantification and licensing support
  • Build Level 1 and Level 2 PRA models for internal and external events across full power and shutdown operating conditions
  • Support thermal-hydraulic modeling (RELAP5-3D, MELCOR) to simulate core and containment response in severe accident scenarios
  • Assist in development and quantification of event trees and fault trees to evaluate key risk metrics such as core damage frequency (CDF) and large release frequency (LRF)
  • Support ongoing updates and maintenance of PSA models as SMR-300 design evolves
  • Apply PSA results to support risk-informed programs (e.g., RTNSS, D-RAP, 10 CFR 50.69 categorization)
  • Interface with design teams to communicate PSA insights and support design decision-making
  • Ensure consistency, accuracy, and quality across PSA analyses and deliverables
  • Contribute to technical documentation supporting regulatory and licensing activities

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
  • 4-6 years of experience in probabilistic risk assessment and/or thermal-hydraulic safety analysis within the nuclear industry
  • Familiarity with thermal-hydraulic behavior of light water reactors (LWRs)
  • Proficiency with PSA and modeling tools (e.g., CAFTA, SAPHIRE, RiskSpectrum, RELAP5-3D, MELCOR)
  • Working knowledge of ASME/ANS PRA Standards and NRC or IAEA risk guidance
  • Ability to interpret analysis results and communicate technical insights clearly
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering team
  • Eligible to work under 10 CFR Part 810
