What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Projection Mapping Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Projection Mapping Specialist, you need expertise in visual design, animation, and a solid understanding of spatial geometry, often supported by a background in multimedia arts or related fields. Familiarity with specialized software like Adobe After Effects, MadMapper, and hardware such as high-lumen projectors is crucial for creating seamless projections. Strong problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration skills help you adapt designs to complex surfaces and work closely with clients and technical teams. These competencies are essential to deliver visually stunning, technically precise installations that meet client and audience expectations.

What is projection mapping?

Projection mapping is a technology used to project images or videos onto irregularly shaped objects or surfaces, such as buildings, stages, or sculptures, rather than traditional flat screens. This technique transforms common objects into dynamic visual displays by aligning the projected content precisely to the contours of the chosen surface. It's widely used in advertising, entertainment, art installations, and live events to create immersive and visually stunning experiences. Projection mapping requires specialized software and careful planning to ensure the visuals fit perfectly onto the intended surface.

How does a projection mapping specialist typically collaborate with other creative and technical team members during a project?

Projection mapping specialists often work closely with a variety of professionals, including lighting designers, animators, audio engineers, and event coordinators. Collaboration starts early in the planning phase to ensure the mapped visuals align seamlessly with the physical environment and overall event vision. Throughout the project, specialists share drafts and test projections, adapting their work based on feedback from the team and technical constraints. This collaborative approach helps ensure that both the artistic and technical aspects of the projection mapping are fully integrated for a successful final presentation.

What Are Projection Mapping Jobs?

Projection mapping allows you to project a video, animation, or display on a three-dimensional surface or object to create amazing displays. Most jobs tend to fall under an AV systems role, such as an engineer or designer. Your duties then include the vast scope of potential video projection projects, from design to installation to maintenance. Your responsibilities include software development, creating drawings for installations, traveling to locations for installation and orientation of the display, managing your hardware inventory, and liaising with the creative team, artist, and customer. Travel is a significant part of projection mapping jobs.

Job description

Description

GMB is currently seeking a Civil Engineer to join our project teams. Our ideal candidate is a humble and confident civil engineer with a passion for educational design, and at least eight (8) years of relevant skills and experience.

Why Work with Us?

This is the part where most job descriptions jump into the responsibilities and requirements for the role being posted - and we'll get there shortly! But we like to start with the why instead of the what.

Our purpose is helping build strong communities through educational opportunity. We focus on projects within the educational ecosystem, from Pre-K through Higher Education and spaces in our community that support lifelong learning. Our integrated team gets to work together on a wide range of project types - building design, performance engineering, communications campaigns, branding, enrollment marketing, financial analysis, projections and planning - and we're proud of the impact that our work has on the lives and trajectories of students across the United States. Will you join us?

As a Civil Engineer at GMB you will:

  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary design teams on a wide variety of projects in the K12 and Higher Education markets.
  • Prepare engineering design by collecting and studying reports, maps, drawings, tests on soil composition, terrain, hydrological characteristics, and related topographical and geologic data.
  • Produce high quality site, stormwater, grading, utility and erosion control plans using AutoCAD Civil3D and prepare specifications to ensure quality work.
  • Prepare and present technical presentations and reports to peers, project teams, agencies and clients.
  • Communicate concerns about construction, bids, code compliance, environmental assessments, geotechnical reports, due diligence, and project budget to project teams and clients.
  • Observe and comply to federal, state, and local legal requirements by staying up to date on legislation and acting as an advisor on needed actions and to ensure project compliance.
  • Have opportunities to participate on other leadership and company teams.

What type of knowledge do I need to succeed in this role?

More than a specific degree and exact number of years of experience, we're most excited about what kind of knowledge you bring. For this role, we are seeking someone with advanced knowledge who uses professional concepts and company objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways with the ability to guide and support more junior people performing related tasks.

Some components that may help indicate you are at this knowledge milestone include more tangible items like:

  • A BS in Civil Engineering
  • A PE license
  • At least 8 years' experience in site design, grading, utility design and development of construction plans
  • Proven to be motivated and self-starting
  • Capability to manage projects, present engineering concepts to clients, agencies and teams to execute a project successfully.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
  • Experience in CAD and proficient in Civil 3D
  • Comfort using Microsoft office applications such as Outlook, Word and Excel

What might set you apart from other candidates?

  • Knowledge of Hydrologic & Hydraulic Modeling Software such as HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, Civil 3D SSA or HydroCAD
  • Proficiency in field inspections; client management, project management, and technical writing (specs)
  • Experience with sustainable design, high performance design and/or USGBC LEED rating desirable
  • Experience in obtaining necessary site permits in the Metro Detroit area
  • A PE license in Indiana or Illinois

We might be a great match for each other if you are:

  • A self-starter with great time management skills who thrives in an environment with team-based decision making.
  • An individual who strives to learn and grow, is motivated by their team's success and works hard to ensure it.
  • Someone who enjoys trying new ideas and constantly improving.

What you might also like to know is that:

We're an employee-owned company. This means that 100% of the ownership at GMB is held by us as employees. Our creativity, skills, and expertise have a direct impact on our value and growth. Your role as a teammate will have a direct impact on the company's actions and result in a share in its profits.

GMB doesn't operate within a hierarchical pyramid structure; instead, we operate like a network of teams that come together around specific goals working toward our overarching purpose. We think this is a better way to work and help everyone reach their potential.

Finally, at GMB we embrace a flexible workplace that empowers each person to decide where and how they work best. Our inclusive, people-first culture encourages teams to collaborate, communicate and find fulfillment personally and professionally, regardless of location or schedule.

This is a full time, permanent position. Salary will be commensurate with experience, including an excellent benefit package. Must have current and continuing right to work in the United States without sponsorship. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, sexual orientation, gender identity or national origin.
