What is a project manager?

Project Managers are professionals responsible for planning, executing, and closing projects within an organization. They coordinate teams, manage resources, set deadlines, and ensure that project goals are achieved on time and within budget. Project Managers communicate with stakeholders, assess risks, and resolve issues that may arise during the project lifecycle. Their role is crucial in ensuring that projects align with business objectives and deliver value.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Manager, you need strong organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in project coordination. Familiarity with project management software (such as Microsoft Project, Asana, or Jira) and certifications like PMP or PRINCE2 are highly valued. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and team collaboration abilities set outstanding project managers apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to stakeholder expectations.

How do project managers typically balance multiple projects and competing deadlines?

Project managers often oversee several projects simultaneously, requiring strong organizational and prioritization skills. They use project management tools and methodologies like Agile or Waterfall to track progress, allocate resources, and adjust timelines as needed. Effective communication with team members and stakeholders is essential to identify potential bottlenecks early and reassign tasks or shift priorities when necessary. Regular status meetings and updates help ensure everyone remains aligned, making it easier to deliver projects on time and within scope.

What are project-based jobs?

Project-based jobs are roles where individuals work on specific tasks or objectives for a set period, often related to a particular project or client. These jobs typically require skills in planning, execution, and time management, and may involve freelance work, contract positions, or temporary employment. Workers in such roles often use project management tools and may need certifications relevant to the industry.

Job description

Project Manager

Location: Tulsa, Oklahoma

Employment Type: Full-Time

About Javelin Operations

Javelin Operations is a rapidly growing specialty contractor serving mission-critical and industrial facilities across the United States. We specialize in mechanical system flushing, chemical treatment, passivation, system cleanliness verification, and water-management solutions, with a strong focus on large-scale data-center infrastructure.

Position Overview

Javelin is seeking an experienced Project Manager to take ownership of projects from contract award through successful completion. This position will coordinate customers, field leadership, engineering, vendors, and subcontractors to ensure each project is delivered safely, profitably, and according to schedule.

This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who can understand complex mechanical scopes, anticipate problems, make decisions, and keep multiple stakeholders aligned. The Project Manager will be accountable for project outcomesโ€”not simply reporting project status.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead assigned projects from preconstruction handoff through execution and closeout.
  • Develop project execution plans, schedules, budgets, procurement strategies, and mobilization requirements.
  • Coordinate field operations, engineering, equipment, materials, chemicals, vendors, and subcontractors.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for customers, general contractors, mechanical contractors, and project partners.
  • Review contracts, drawings, specifications, proposals, and scope requirements.
  • Track project costs, labor productivity, commitments, billing, forecasts, and overall profitability.
  • Identify scope changes and manage pricing, documentation, and approval of change orders.
  • Lead project meetings and provide clear reporting on schedule, cost, risk, and upcoming decisions.
  • Anticipate execution challenges and resolve issues before they affect safety, schedule, or quality.
  • Ensure project documentation, testing records, turnover packages, and closeout requirements are completed accurately.
  • Support the continued development of Javelinโ€™s project-management systems and operating standards.
Qualifications
  • At least five years of project-management experience in mechanical construction, industrial construction, commissioning, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical piping systems, construction drawings, specifications, schedules, and contract documents.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage project budgets, forecasting, procurement, billing, and change orders.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-moving environment with limited oversight.
  • Proficiency with common project-management, scheduling, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites as needed.
Preferred Experience
  • Data centers, mission-critical facilities, central utility plants, or large industrial projects.
  • Hydronic piping, mechanical-system flushing, water treatment, passivation, or commissioning.
  • Mechanical contracting or self-perform construction operations.
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in construction management, engineering, or a related discipline. Relevant field experience may be considered in place of a degree.
What Weโ€™re Looking For

The right candidate takes ownership, communicates directly, and follows through. You should be comfortable operating in a growing company where processes are continually improving and individual contributions have a visible impact. We value sound judgment, urgency, accountability, and the ability to build trust with both customers and field teams.

Javelin offers competitive compensation, benefits, and the opportunity to play a meaningful role in building one of the industryโ€™s leading specialty contractors.
