Project Manager Direct Hire information

What is a project manager direct hire?

A Project Manager Direct Hire is a professional who is recruited and employed directly by a company to oversee and manage specific projects. Unlike contract or temporary project managers, direct hires are permanent employees who are responsible for planning, executing, and closing projects while managing teams, budgets, and timelines. This role often involves coordinating between various departments, stakeholders, and external vendors to ensure project goals are met efficiently. Being a direct hire typically offers more stability and benefits compared to contract positions.

How does a project manager direct hire typically collaborate with cross-functional teams?

As a direct hire Project Manager, you'll regularly coordinate with cross-functional teams such as engineering, marketing, finance, and operations. This involves leading meetings to align on project goals, negotiating deadlines, and facilitating communication to ensure everyone stays informed and on track. You may face challenges in balancing competing priorities and resolving conflicts, but strong interpersonal and organizational skills help foster collaboration. Establishing clear roles, responsibilities, and expectations early in the project is key to successful teamwork.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project manager direct hire, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Manager (Direct Hire), you need strong organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in business, management, or a related field. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project, Asana, or Jira) and certifications like PMP or PRINCE2 are often required. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and stakeholder management abilities help you navigate complex team dynamics and shifting project priorities. These skills ensure successful project delivery, client satisfaction, and efficient use of resources in fast-paced environments.

What is the difference between Project Manager Direct Hire vs Project Coordinator?

AspectProject Manager Direct HireProject Coordinator
CredentialsBachelor's degree, PMP certification often preferredAssociate's or Bachelor's degree, relevant certifications optional
Work EnvironmentLeads projects, manages teams, responsible for project successSupports project tasks, assists project managers, coordinates activities
Employer UsageUsed across industries for managing complex projectsCommonly supports project teams in various industries

The main difference is that a Project Manager Direct Hire is responsible for leading and managing entire projects, while a Project Coordinator supports project activities and assists the project manager. The Project Manager typically has more experience, certifications, and accountability for project outcomes.

Can I get a remote job as a project manager?

Yes, many project manager roles are available as remote positions, especially in industries like IT, marketing, and consulting. Remote project managers need strong communication skills, proficiency with project management tools, and often require relevant certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master. Availability of remote work depends on the employer and project requirements.

Is it possible to get a project manager job without previous direct experience?

While previous direct experience is often preferred for project manager roles, candidates with strong transferable skills such as leadership, communication, and organization, along with relevant certifications like PMP or CAPM, can sometimes qualify for entry-level or assistant project manager positions. Gaining experience through related roles or certifications can improve chances of securing a project management job without direct prior experience.

Job Title: Project Manager – Natural Gas Compressor Station Construction

LOCATION: PULASKI, WI

Job Description

This role leads onsite construction activities for large, multi‑discipline natural gas compressor station and heavy industrial power projects. The Project Manager oversees field engineers, coordinates with trades and subcontractors, and manages cost, schedule, and safety for complex industrial facilities involving civil, mechanical, electrical, and extensive piping work. The position is highly hands‑on, requires significant time at the project site, and plays a key role in delivering major compressor station and power plant projects for data center generation and industrial pipeline facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead onsite project execution at natural gas compressor stations and heavy industrial facilities, ensuring work progresses safely, efficiently, and in line with project objectives.
  • Direct and mentor field engineers, typically two or more, and take primary ownership of project cost and schedule performance.
  • Maintain and promote a strong safety culture across all site activities, enforcing safety and compliance standards for utility lines, facility construction, and pipe integrity work.
  • Assist in managing smaller projects as needed, providing support to project leadership while taking full ownership of assigned scopes.
  • Review and understand contract terms, conditions, and scope to ensure all work aligns with contractual requirements and client expectations.
  • Track materials, production, and project costs, compile data for review and approval, and provide accurate reporting to support budget and schedule control.
  • Facilitate and coordinate subcontractor activities across electrical, mechanical, civil, process piping, and other disciplines to keep work aligned with the overall project plan.
  • Maintain and update the project schedule, identifying risks, constraints, and mitigation strategies to keep the project on track.
  • Perform basic estimating and quantity takeoffs, and solicit quotes from vendors and subcontractors to support proposals, change orders, and project planning.
  • Provide onsite administrative support, including documentation, reporting, and communication with project stakeholders.
  • Assist with quality assurance and quality control activities, including test protocols, inspections, and verification that work meets design specifications and standards.
  • Oversee the full project lifecycle, from initial estimating and proposals through execution, commissioning, and final close‑out.
  • Direct project activities to ensure goals and objectives are achieved within defined timeframes and budget parameters.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships, serving as a trusted partner while identifying potential new business opportunities in the market.
  • Manage document control processes, including tracking and organizing drawings, specifications, contracts, RFIs, and other project documents from inception to completion.
  • Lead drawing revision and redline management, ensuring that field changes are properly captured, communicated, and incorporated into the latest design documents.
  • Oversee project scopes of $50M or more, actively monitoring cost, schedule, and risk for large, complex industrial construction projects.
  • Manage and coordinate subcontractors in one or more key disciplines, with a strong emphasis on electrical and mechanical, and potentially civil and process piping.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications, and use project management software to plan, track, and report project progress.
  • Communicate clearly and frequently with field teams, project engineers, construction management, quality, and safety personnel to align daily and weekly work plans.
  • Be present onsite at least half of each month, and preferably full‑time, to provide direct oversight and support for field activities.
  • Remain open to working extended hours, including evenings and weekends as needed, to meet project milestones and resolve critical issues.
  • Support expansion and upgrade projects at existing plants as well as greenfield generation plant construction for data centers.
  • Collaborate with sister companies and internal teams providing electrical and mechanical support to maintain control and integration across the project.
  • Contribute to a team environment where field managers, project engineers, construction management, quality, and safety staff work closely together to deliver successful projects.

Essential Skills

  • Several years of experience as a Project Manager or in a similar project leadership role with a general contractor (GC) or engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firm on heavy industrial, compressor station, or power plant projects.
  • Proven experience managing document control, including tracking and organizing drawings, specifications, contracts, and RFIs throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage drawing revisions and redlines, ensuring field changes are accurately documented and integrated into current design sets.
  • Experience overseeing the cost and schedule for project scopes of $50M or more, with a track record of delivering projects within budget and timeline constraints.
  • Experience in overseeing subcontractors in one or more disciplines, with strong preference for electrical and mechanical, and exposure to civil and process piping work.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to coordinate effectively with field engineers, trades, subcontractors, and project stakeholders.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and technical documents for industrial facilities.
  • Experience using project management software to plan, track, and report on schedules, costs, and progress.
  • Willingness and ability to be onsite at least half of each month, and ideally full‑time, to provide direct project oversight.
  • Flexibility to work long hours, including evenings and weekends when required by project demands.
  • Experience in construction management for industrial plants, compressor stations, power plants, or similar heavy industrial environments.
  • Experience working in multi‑discipline settings involving civil, mechanical, electrical, and piping scopes.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with industrial plant builds, including compressor stations, power plants, and gas turbine facilities.
  • Familiarity with MEP systems, gas infrastructure, turbine equipment, and power generation facilities.
  • Prior field engineering experience supporting large industrial or power projects.
  • Comfort working within an EPC or GC structure where sister companies perform portions of the work or provide specialized oversight.
  • Ability to support both greenfield generation plant construction for data centers and expansion or upgrade projects at existing industrial plants.
  • Strong relationship‑building skills with clients, vendors, and subcontractors, with the ability to identify and support new business opportunities.
  • Solid understanding of safety and compliance requirements for utility lines, industrial facilities, and pipeline integrity projects.
  • Capability to perform basic estimating, quantity takeoffs, and quote solicitation to support bids and change management.
