Job description

The City of Overland Park has a Seasonal Internship for an Assistant Horticulture and Maintenance Intern available in the Parks and Recreation Department.
SUMMARY:
Intern position designed for students seeking real world work experience in the area of Park Horticulture and Maintenance. Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of Parks & Recreation facilities and grounds. Assists in the planting and maintenance of flowers, trees, shrubs, and sod.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assists with the planting and maintenance of landscape beds including shrubs, perennials, annual flowers, and trees. Operates hand tools, string trimmers, backpack blowers, chemical sprayers, water tanks, and pole saw.
  • Performs landscaping maintenance to include: planting, mulching, weeding, watering, and pruning.
  • Maintains, inspects, repairs, lubricates and cleans equipment and tools per manufacturer specifications listed in equipment manuals. Follows proper storage, maintenance and use techniques according to City policies and procedures.
  • Assists with construction, maintenance, and repair of landscape, hardscape, grounds, and facilities.
  • Assists in emergency operations, including snow removal and storm clean up, as required.
  • May be required to work alongside other staff in the support of irrigation, water features, and facility maintenance duties.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • The employee must work the days and hours necessary to perform all assigned responsibilities and tasks. Must be available (especially during regular business hours or shifts) to communicate with supervisors, customers, and any other persons or organization with whom interaction is required to accomplish work and employer goals.
  • The employee must be punctual and timely in meeting all requirements of performance, including, but not limited to, attendance standards and work deadlines; beginning and ending assignments on time; and scheduled work breaks, where applicable.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Minimum 16 years of age.
  • No experience required.
  • Possession of a valid drivers license.
