Job description

Position Purpose

The Strategic Portfolio Manager (SPM) acts as the strategic owner of the assigned portfolio, providing visibility, insights, and direction to senior leadership. This role expands beyond traditional portfolio management by focusing on enterprise-wide alignment, prioritization frameworks, and strategic portfolio optimization rather than execution oversight alone.

Under the direction of the TMO leadership, the SPM will be responsible for a portfolio of projects approved, funded, and assigned to the TMO for execution. This position will support enterprise portfolio strategy, prioritization, governance, and executive decision-making across assigned portfolios.

This role ensures that initiatives are aligned with organizational priorities, optimized for value delivery, and balanced against enterprise capacity and constraints.

Nature and Scope

This is a senior-level individual contributor role focused on enterprise portfolio strategy and governance, including:

• Ownership of assigned portfolio strategy, prioritization, and alignment to organizational goals

• Oversight and/or direct execution and delivery of projects within a defined portfolio or segment.

• Providing transparency of portfolio health, performance, and investment through executive reporting and dashboards

• Leading portfolio governance forums and facilitating executive decision-making.

• Driving enterprise visibility into demand, capacity, and resource allocation

• Supporting standardization of intake, prioritization, and portfolio management processes

• Supporting cross-functional portfolios (clinical, operational, IT, construction, capital initiatives)

SIGNIFICANT RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategic Planning & Prioritization

• Establishes and maintains a standardized enterprise portfolio prioritization framework.

• Aligns portfolio initiatives to strategic organizational goals and business priorities.

• Partners with executive leadership to evaluate and prioritize investments.

• Facilitates trade-off decisions based on value, risk, capacity, and resource constraints.

Portfolio Governance & Decision Support

• Leads portfolio governance structures and decision-making forums.

• Provides recommendations and insights into executive leadership.

• Ensures consistent intake, evaluation, and approval processes across portfolios.

• Identifies and escalates cross-portfolio risks, dependencies, and conflicts.

Portfolio Reporting & Insights

• Develops and delivers enterprise portfolio dashboards and executive reporting.

• Provides visibility into portfolio health, performance, and investment alignment.

• Tracks KPIs and performance metrics, ensuring initiative-taking course correction.

• Leverages tools (e.g., ServiceNow dashboards) to enable data-driven decision-making.

Resource & Capacity Optimization

• Provides enterprise-level demand and capacity transparency.

• Partners with resource management optimize allocation across initiatives.

• Identifies resource conflicts and drives resolution across competing priorities.

• Balances portfolio demand against available resource capacity

Portfolio Leadership & Collaboration

• Acts as the single point of accountability for assigned portfolio strategy.

• Collaborate with the project managers who are working within their portfolio scope.

• Manages multiple projects under a portfolio to an acceptable level of risk – managing scope, time, cost, quality, and to stakeholder expectations.

• Collaborates across programs, project, operational, and business teams.

• Works closely with senior leadership to align execution with enterprise priorities.

• Supports ongoing maturity of portfolio management capabilities within the TMO.

Education:

Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to perform job duties safely and effectively. Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in business, healthcare, information systems, or related field from an accredited college or university. Master’s degree preferred, although not required.

Experience:

Five or more years experience in a portfolio, program, or strategic planning role with a proven track record of facilitating complex organizational projects. Strong leadership and relationship skills, with ability to engage senior executives. Demonstrated experience in enterprise portfolio management and prioritization with an understanding of health care operations, information and technology system complexities, and project management. Excellent presentation and communication skills. Experience delivering executive-level reporting and insights. Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and facilitate decision-making. Experience with financial tracking, project management, portfolio planning, and resource management. Ability to drive collaboration across cross-functional teams.

License(s):

Valid State of Nevada or California driver's license and ability to pass Renown Health's Department of Motor Vehicle Report criteria.

Certification(s):

Project Management Institute Project Management Professional (PMI-PMP) certification or equivalent required at time of hire.

PMI-Agile Certified Practitioner (AGP), PMI-Portfolio Management Professional (PfMP), ICP-LPM, or SAFe Lean Portfolio Manager. Portfolio Management and Agile/Scrum certifications preferred.

Computer / Typing:

Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, and Word and have the ability to use the computer to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
