Job description

Position Summary:

  • The Certification Engineer is a member of the Engineering Team. The primary responsibility is to manage the certification process on multiple projects and platforms under the direction and guidance of the Engineering Director. Certification Engineer will require project management skills, business communication skills, and knowledge of the regulations governing aviation safety.

Education:

  • College degree in a related field preferred, or related career work experience.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

Experience:

  • Knowledge of the FAA Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs)
  • Knowledge of activities associated with FAA Certification for PMA projects, supplemental type certificates, and type certificates.
  • Minimum of (5) years’ experience in an Aerospace Engineering & Certification environment

Technical Skills:

  • Good organization, interpersonal and technical communication skills required.
  • Typing skills of at least 35 words per minute
  • Understanding and Interpretation of Engineering Drawings
  • Skill and expertise to collect, organize, synthesize, and analyze data, summarize findings, develop conclusions and recommendations from appropriate data sources.

  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment as needed
  • Technical and professional writing skills must be at an above average level

Work Environment / Essential Physical Functions:

  • The work environment shall include office areas, manufacturing plant areas (conditioned and unconditioned), outside during any season, and may include travel.
  • Noise and particulate exposure in select manufacturing areas, eye and ear protection required respectively
  • Ability to sit and/or stand 10 hours a day
  • Ability to lift/carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, and reach above head
  • Ability to climb step stool and/or enter confined workspaces for evaluation of manufacturing processes

Language Skills:

  • Ability to understand and follow documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to clearly communicate verbally and written using the English language.

Duties and Tasks:

  • Administrative duties including acquiring data from customers, organizing data and routing final approval packages to the FAA.
  • Prepare applications, test plans and reports for PMA and STC projects.
  • Prepare certification data packages in accordance with the requirements of the FAA Design Approval and Regulations.
  • For certification projects; Support FAA Conformity activities, perform company level inspections for test articles & test setups, and issue FAA Form 8130-9 Statement of Conformity in accordance with 14 CFR 21.33 & 21.53. Act on behalf of outside certification project applicants, as their agents in support of FAA Conformity activities. (Apprentice Certification Engineer is not authorized for this task).
  • Acquire knowledge of the certification regulations, guidance material and the means of demonstrating compliance against those requirements.
  • Data review including drawings, test plans and reports.
  • Prepare test plans and compliance reports with guidance from specialists.
  • Coordinate with the FAA, DER’s, DAR’s, and Technical Specialists (internal / external), as required.
  • Participate in and/or host meetings with the team, company, and customers as required.
  • Act as project lead on certification projects as assigned.
  • Other duties as required.

Apprentice Certification Engineer

An Apprentice Certification Engineer may be a position granted to an individual with a subset of the skills list above. Minimum of (2) years of experience in a related field with an emphasis on certification activity. Such experience may include a support role in certification or airworthiness projects. With proper display of acquiring necessary skills and experience, the Apprentice Certification Engineer may be considered for promotion to Certification Engineer.
