Chief Engineer (2nd Class Power Engineer)

Manufacturing Plant – Downtown Toronto

Position Summary
The Chief Engineer is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of all plant utilities, refrigeration systems, boilers, HVAC, and mechanical infrastructure within the manufacturing facility. Reporting to the Plant Manager, the successful candidate will lead the maintenance and power engineering team while ensuring compliance with all regulatory, safety, environmental, and food manufacturing standards.

This role requires a strong technical leader with a valid 2nd Class Power Engineer Certificate and extensive experience in a unionized manufacturing or food processing environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operation and maintenance of boilers, ammonia refrigeration systems, compressors, HVAC, water treatment, and plant utilities.
  • Ensure compliance with TSSA regulations, Ontario Boiler and Pressure Vessel regulations, and all applicable safety standards.
  • Lead preventive and predictive maintenance programs to maximize equipment uptime and operational efficiency.
  • Supervise and mentor operating engineers, maintenance technicians, and contractors.
  • Coordinate plant shutdowns, capital projects, and equipment installations.
  • Manage energy usage and utility optimization initiatives to support sustainability and cost reduction goals.
  • Respond to emergency breakdowns and provide technical troubleshooting support.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, logs, inspections, and regulatory documentation.
  • Support food safety and quality programs including HACCP, GMP, and environmental compliance standards.
  • Collaborate with production, quality assurance, and engineering teams to improve plant performance and reliability.
  • Develop and manage departmental budgets, spare parts inventory, and contractor services.

Qualifications

  • Valid Ontario 2nd Class Operating Engineer Certificate required.
  • Minimum 7–10 years of experience in a manufacturing or food processing environment.
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience in a plant engineering or maintenance role.
  • Strong knowledge of steam systems, ammonia refrigeration, HVAC, pumps, compressors, and industrial utilities.
  • Familiarity with CMMS systems and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Working knowledge of HACCP, GMP, and food manufacturing regulations is considered an asset.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and respond to plant emergencies as required.
