What is a program manager?

Program managers are professionals responsible for overseeing multiple related projects within an organization, ensuring they align with strategic goals and deliver expected outcomes. They coordinate the efforts of project managers, manage resources, set priorities, and address risks and issues that arise across the program. Unlike project managers who focus on individual projects, program managers take a broader view, ensuring that all projects within a program work together effectively to achieve long-term business objectives.

What does a program manager do?

The job of a program manager is to plan, organize, and coordinate management programs or external programs for a business or institution. As a program manager, your duties vary depending on the type of organization for which you work, but many of the responsibilities for this role are similar or overlap. You typically supervise numerous associates and analysts who help prepare data and assessments about current programming and how it can be improved. You help to implement new programs for employees or customers and promote them through HR or outreach coordinators and marketing professionals. You also assess individual projects and how they interact with one another.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a program manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Program Manager, you need strong project management skills, strategic planning abilities, and a relevant degree, often supported by certifications like PMP or Agile. Familiarity with tools such as Microsoft Project, Jira, or Asana is essential for tracking progress and managing resources. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help you motivate teams and navigate complex stakeholder environments. These competencies ensure that programs are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with organizational goals.

What are some common challenges program managers face when coordinating cross-functional teams?

Program Managers often encounter challenges such as aligning priorities across diverse teams, managing conflicting stakeholder expectations, and ensuring clear communication among departments with different workflows. Navigating these challenges requires strong negotiation and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to build consensus and foster collaboration. Successful Program Managers proactively establish regular check-ins, promote transparency, and adapt strategies to keep projects on track and maintain team engagement.

Job description

This is a remote position.

Company:

Juice Marketing is a Seattle-based Creative Production House specializing in branded merchandise, web development, and video production. We thrive on being enthusiastic, authentic, and real while providing creative solutions to help clients tell their brand’s story. Our culture is lively and it’s because of people! Creativity flows through our halls…and you never know what interesting project is developing on any given day. From Denver to Seattle…Louisville to New York, we never lose sight that what we do is actually a ton of fun!

Job Description:

Are you a confident, resourceful leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment, solves problems creatively, and knows how to bring people together to drive results? Juice Marketing is seeking a Program Manager to join our team.

The ideal candidate brings a sales-driven, self-starter mindset, thrives in a fast-paced, high-volume environment, and is comfortable operating in the grey areas rather than needing everything spelled out in black and white. If you're energized by owning the full picture on your accounts, from strategy and financial health to product development and client relationships, and you take smart risks while staying calm under pressure, this could be the right opportunity for you.

Responsibilities: The candidate will:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact and account leader for multiple client programs at once, owning each program's strategy and execution from start to finish

  • Lead the team supporting each account by managing timelines, delegating tasks, and making sure every piece fits together

  • Own the financial health of assigned accounts, including P&L management, monthly reporting, billing and invoicing accuracy, and profitability adjustments

  • Develop growth strategies, identify new sales opportunities, and hit provided sales and margin targets across assigned programs

  • Guide product development from concept through launch, using past sales history, inventory data, and trend analysis to shape recommendations for what goes into each client's program

  • Manage contract execution and ensure ongoing alignment with client agreements

  • Direct marketing calendar planning and creative execution, partnering with internal teams to bring client-specific strategies to life

  • Create account-specific policies and standards for customer service, client expectations, and site FAQs

  • Build and maintain strong working relationships across vendors, customers, and internal teams, communicating clearly with each

  • Travel periodically to support client accounts and business reviews, typically once to twice per quarter (up to 25% travel)

  • Track and report on program performance metrics and financial outcomes, adjusting course as client needs shift

  • Adapt quickly in a fast-paced, high-volume environment where every program looks different from client to client

Requirements

Requirements: The candidate must:

  • Have experience in account or program management, ideally within promotional products, advertising, or a closely related/transferable field

  • Be comfortable owning multiple client accounts and programs simultaneously without losing sight of the details on any one of them

  • Bring a resourceful, self-starter mindset, comfortable figuring things out without specific direction and adjusting quickly as priorities shift

  • Take calculated risks rather than defaulting to risk-averse decisions, while remaining calm under pressure

  • Have a strong understanding of, or the ability to quickly learn, the promotional products/merchandising industry, including sourcing and product development

  • Be a logical thinker with strong client communication skills and a natural sales personality

  • Be comfortable with fast onboarding and a high-volume, fast-paced work environment

  • Be comfortable using Microsoft Office Suite and project management tools such as Asana, ClickUp, Monday, or Smartsheet, along with Excel and Shopify

  • Be willing to travel periodically to support client accounts (roughly twice per quarter, up to 25% travel)
