What Is the Job of a Program Manager?

The job of a program manager is to plan, organize, and coordinate management programs or external programs for a business or institution. As a program manager, your duties vary depending on the type of organization for which you work, but many of the responsibilities for this role are similar or overlap. You typically supervise numerous associates and analysts who help prepare data and assessments about current programming and how it can be improved. You help to implement new programs for employees or customers and promote them through HR or outreach coordinators and marketing professionals. You also assess individual projects and how they interact with one another.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Program Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Program Manager, you need strong project management skills, strategic planning abilities, and a relevant degree, often supported by certifications like PMP or Agile. Familiarity with tools such as Microsoft Project, Jira, or Asana is essential for tracking progress and managing resources. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help you motivate teams and navigate complex stakeholder environments. These competencies ensure that programs are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with organizational goals.

What are some common challenges Program Managers face when coordinating cross-functional teams?

Program Managers often encounter challenges such as aligning priorities across diverse teams, managing conflicting stakeholder expectations, and ensuring clear communication among departments with different workflows. Navigating these challenges requires strong negotiation and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to build consensus and foster collaboration. Successful Program Managers proactively establish regular check-ins, promote transparency, and adapt strategies to keep projects on track and maintain team engagement.

What are program managers?

Program managers are professionals responsible for overseeing multiple related projects within an organization, ensuring they align with strategic goals and deliver expected outcomes. They coordinate the efforts of project managers, manage resources, set priorities, and address risks and issues that arise across the program. POSITION SUMMARY

We are partnering with a global industrial organization that delivers highly engineered systems into largescale, missioncritical capital construction projects. This role sits at the program level, responsible for driving execution across multiple complex customer projects simultaneously.

The Program Manager will serve as the central point of accountability for delivery, overseeing the successful execution of a portfolio of capital projects from early planning through installation and commissioning. This individual will operate at the intersection of engineering, supply chain, manufacturing, and field operations, ensuring alignment across all functions to meet customer commitments.

This is a highly visible, crossfunctional leadership role requiring strong ownership of schedule, cost, risk, and customer outcomes across multiple concurrent projects.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Own delivery across a portfolio of complex customer projects, ensuring alignment of priorities, resources, and timelines across the full program lifecycle
  • Serve as the primary point of accountability for customer commitments, proactively managing escalations, competing priorities, and overall delivery performance
  • Establish program-level visibility into schedule, cost, and progress, ensuring projects remain on track and corrective actions are taken proactively
  • Drive coordination across engineering, procurement, manufacturing, logistics, and field execution teams to ensure seamless delivery of engineered systems into construction environments
  • Oversee construction integration, ensuring alignment between design, procurement, manufacturing, and site execution activities
  • Manage interfaces between internal teams and external stakeholders, ensuring smooth handoffs between engineering, suppliers, contractors, and installation teams
  • Ensure readiness across all key phases including manufacturing release, site delivery, installation, commissioning, and final handover
  • Oversee performance of thirdparty suppliers, contractors, and service providers, ensuring compliance with delivery schedules and contractual expectations
  • Lead program-level risk identification and mitigation, including construction, supply chain, and schedule risks
  • Maintain structured program governance, including progress tracking, reporting, and stakeholder communication across internal leadership and customers
  • Drive execution discipline across projects, ensuring accountability, prioritization, and consistency in delivery standards
  • Promote adherence to quality, safety (HSE), and operational standards across all program activities

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10-15+ years of experience in program or senior project leadership within capital project, infrastructure, or engineered systems environments
  • Proven track record managing multiple concurrent projects with direct accountability for cost, schedule, and delivery outcomes
  • Strong experience working across engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, and construction/site execution environments
  • Demonstrated ability to lead in customer-facing roles, managing expectations, escalations, and stakeholder alignment
  • Experience supporting projects through installation, commissioning, and final delivery
  • Background in industries such as EPC, industrial manufacturing, energy, infrastructure, or construction-driven environments
  • Strong understanding of program-level coordination, risk management, and execution oversight in complex, high-visibility environments
  • Familiarity with structured project/program delivery frameworks (PMI or equivalent) is a plus, but not required
