An employee in this class is responsible for providing professional librarian services to patrons of the library with a focus on youth (ages 0-17). This employee serves youth by providing reference and readers' advisory assistance, developing collections and services, and managing and designing the youth library experience. Work includes coordination and implementation of programs, advising and assisting in activities and special events, and organizing and filing program materials and records.

The employee actively serves as a member of the Library Management Team. Work is performed under general supervision of the Library Director and is reviewed through daily observation and conferences and is evaluated based on meeting established goals. Duties and Responsibilities/Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Works daily with the general public by providing customer service, reference and reader's advisory with a focus on youth library users.

Maintains and builds young adult and children's collections. Creates appropriate displays and other related materials, such as reading lists, to promote the youth collections. Develops programs and services, delivering programs if needed, for children and young adults including but not limited to Storytimes, as well as, school age and teen programming.

This includes planning and promotion and creating related promotional materials. Coordinates and implements branch programs in concert with branch supervisors. Trains staff on youth program and service delivery.

Provides instruction and assistance to library patrons of all ages in the use of the computer catalog, Internet, and other library technology and equipment. Serves as a leader and point of contact in absence of library administration. Works with library partners to generate publicity for library events and initiatives.

Serves as liaison to the elementary, middle, and high schools, and visits schools for events and promotion as needed. In collaboration with the Outreach Coordinator serves as liaison to daycares and area preschools. Creates electronic finding aids for youth resources and collections.

Maintains an awareness of professional trends by attending regular professional development and reviewing library professional journals and websites. Additional Job Duties: Performs related work as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thorough knowledge of books, materials and resources in area of assignment.

Thorough knowledge of electronic information systems, including the Internet. Considerable knowledge of the operational practices of a public library and practices of library science. Skill in presentations and in program-related public contact.

Skill in providing reference and reader's advisory services. Ability to plan and coordinate successful programs and services relating to assigned collection of materials. Ability to assess and assist patrons of all ages and demographic groups, and to acquire materials to meet patron needs.

Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, volunteers, officials and the general public. Ability to use computers and equipment in support of public library services.

Physical Requirements Must be able to perform the basic life operational skills of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force. Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, to operate a computer terminal, for extensive reading, for visual inspection of books and materials at distances close to the eyes, and for use of measurement devices.

Work requires operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities. Work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts. Desirable Education and Experience Master's degree in Library Science from an accredited ALA accredited school and moderate experience in programming and young adult services; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Other Information Must possess a valid North Carolina's Driver's license upon hire. Must obtain certification as a NC Public Librarian from the NC State Library and complete Defensive Driving training within six months of employment.
