The Position

The Principal Program Manager, Process Safety & Risk is a hands-on, strategic position responsible for the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of process safety and EHS risk management programs that protect people, our pipeline, and our right to operate. As a highly experienced engineer, you will combine subject-matter expertise with the ability to communicate, influence, and provide practical in-the-field solutions to real-world problems to help achieve our aspiration toward zero injuries and illnesses.

The Opportunity

The Principal Program Manager, Process Safety & Risk will apply advanced theoretical knowledge and contribute to the development of new principles and concepts to independently address unusually complex or strategic problems. To excel in this position, the ideal candidate will possess 8+ years of progressive experience and a unique blend of strong technical expertise, exceptional leadership skills, and strategic agility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive a multi-year Process Safety and SHE Risk Management strategy that directly aligns with the site's mission to deliver life-saving drug substances.

  • Exercise high-level autonomy and independent judgment to shape the organization's long-range goals and significant strategic outcomes.

  • Lead root-cause analysis and complex incident investigations, applying innovative engineering solutions to ensure a path toward zero injuries and illnesses.

  • Ensure strict adherence to Roche Corporate SHE Directives (including K3 and K9) by developing and continuously improving comprehensive risk management programs.

  • Serve as the primary cross-functional liaison, effectively partnering with manufacturing, engineering, production services, warehouse, and quality teams in addition to contractors and service providers to ensure the successful execution of site-wide safety initiatives.

  • Act as a key organizational spokesperson, synthesizing complex technical data into clear, persuasive messages to influence stakeholders and drive policy adoption.

  • Champion operational efficiency by managing budgets, schedules, and change management efforts that reframe safety challenges into sustainable business opportunities.

Who You Are

  • Bachelor's degree in chemical, mechanical, civil, or electrical engineering. Certification as a registered professional engineer is preferred, but not required.

  • 8+ years of relevant work experience in SHE program management, process safety engineering, or risk management. Prior experience in the Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical industries or high-hazard environments is preferred.

  • Extensive "hands-on" experience in leading process safety reviews, conducting safety risk assessments, and developing strategic control solutions using engineering and administrative controls. Extensive in-the-field experience conducting incident investigations and root-cause analysis.

  • Thorough knowledge of environment, health, and safety regulations, codes, and standards, including Cal/OSHA, OSHA, EPA, NIOSH, Cal/ARP, and local CUPA requirements.

  • Excellent teamwork skills with the ability to effectively lead, facilitate, and motivate cross-functional and interdepartmental agile teams in a fast-paced environment.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $138,500.00- 257,100.00 USD. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
