Primary Purpose of DepartmentDigital and Professional Learning (DPL) reports to the division of Academic Affairs, reporting to the Associate Provost. DPL works collaboratively with departments, colleges, and academic support units to ensure integrated partnerships for enrollment growth, student success, and faculty effectiveness in teaching.
Primary Purpose of PositionThe Program Director will serve as one of the operational directors for the online BS in Professional Studies within the School of Professional Studies. In addition, the Program Director will oversee program management for online, hybrid, and off-campus academic programs within the Charlotte Online portfolio, including programs offered in partnership with other colleges and schools across UNC Charlotte. The portfolio may also include noncredit programs that share curriculum with or provide a credit pathway to the BS in Professional Studies. Program management roles specific to the BS in Professional Studies will include instructor/faculty recruitment; instructor selection, hiring, and retention; program design and curriculum development of new concentrations; course development planning; budgeting, forecasting, and financial management of the program; admissions and advising strategy and partnerships; quality assessment and improvements; and performance coaching of the academic faculty director. For shared programs within their portfolio, the Program Director will serve as the liaison for the Digital & Professional Learning unit, working with colleges to ensure high-quality, accessible programs that meet annual enrollment growth goals. The major responsibilities can be grouped into areas of program development, program support, student services, compliance activities, and quality assurance. The role requires a proactive and strategic approach, strong organizational and critical thinking skills, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to engage confidently and diplomatically in shared governance environments while building effective relationships with faculty, academic leadership, and external partners. Success in this role requires sound judgment, composure under pressure, discretion in sensitive situations, and the ability to navigate complex institutional dynamics with professionalism and political acumen.
Summary of Position ResponsibilitiesThe Program Director leads strategic operation management efforts for the BS in Professional Studies, including instructor/faculty recruitment; instructor selection, hiring, and retention; program design and curriculum development of new concentrations; course development planning; budgeting, forecasting, and financial management of the program; admissions and advising strategy and partnerships; quality assessment and improvements; and performance coaching of the academic faculty director. The Program Director also works collaboratively with academic departments and colleges to ensure an integrated and effective, institution-wide planning (in both the short and long term), marketing, delivery, and assessment of Academic Programs and courses. The Senior Program Manager (SPM) is assigned overall responsibility for several specific academic programs, and is also assigned to be the central point of contact on specific issues, services, technologies, etc., that impact academic programs.
Minimum Education/Experience - Master's degree and at least two years of work experience in the administration or direct program management of educational programs.
- Equivalent combinations of education and relevant experience may be considered.
- Applicants must be experienced in using a personal computer for word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and web-based applications.
- Applicants must have experience in and/or knowledge of: contemporary models for academic online teaching and learning, including the delivery of support services to students remote from the campus, a variety of academic/online technologies, marketing principles and strategies, and the delivery of programs online and at off-campus sites, and to adult learners.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience - Master's degree in higher education, adult education, learning and development, instructional design, educational research/evaluation, or a closely related field.
- Experience in academic and/or online education, including knowledge of contemporary teaching and learning models and the delivery of programs and support services to adult or remote learners.
- Demonstrated ability to navigate complex academic environments with professionalism, political acumen, discretion, and sound judgment, particularly in situations involving shared governance, faculty relations, and sensitive institutional matters.
- Experience supporting outcomes assessment, continuous improvement processes, and data-informed decision-making for program evaluation and planning.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple high-priority initiatives, lead change initiatives, communicate effectively, and build collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders.
