Job description

Job Description:

Confluent Medical Technologiesis a financially healthy and rapidly growing medical device company whose employees are passionate about providing life-saving solutions to our customers through a collaborative and high-impact work environment. Our environment reflects a culture of growth, leadership, and innovation in which our employees can directly impact the world by doing work that truly matters.

We are looking for a Senior Commercial Product Development Director to join our team.

SUMMARY: The Senior Commercial Product Development Director is the functional leader of Confluent's Commercial Product Development capability. This role owns the commercial governance of Product Development (PD) programs-from initial scoping and customer alignment through business case approval, rescoping, and handoff to production-including end-to-end ownership of pricing and quoting for active PD projects. The role ensures programs are financially sound, contractually clear, and aligned to the approved Product Specification/Scope Requirements (PSR). The leader will build and manage the team, operating rhythm, and tools required to manage a large portfolio of development programs with material revenue impact.

At any point in time, Confluent may be managing 40+ active development programs representing hundreds of millions of dollars in future production revenue and tens of millions of dollars in near-term development revenue. The Senior Director, Commercial Product Development is responsible for (but not limited to) the following:

  • Own end-to-end pricing and quoting for active Product Development programs, including quote strategy, pricing architecture, assumptions, approvals, and delivery of customer-ready proposals.

  • Own and continuously improve the end-to-end business case for PD programs (value proposition, cost/margin, investment needs, volume assumptions, and commercial terms), using approved quotes/pricing as core inputs.

  • Ensure all development programs remain aligned to the approved PSR, including scope, deliverables, timing, and the commercial assumptions embedded in the quote (pricing, volumes, yields, and milestones).

  • Lead commercial rescoping and requoting when programs drift from PSR (e.g., requirements changes, cost/yield shifts, timeline changes), including customer alignment, change-control documentation, and internal re-approval.

  • Establish portfolio visibility and monthly reporting on PSR alignment, quote status (new/updated), forecasted development and production revenue, margin, and key commercial risks/assumptions.

  • For programs requiring changes, update pricing/quote assumptions and coordinate PSR revisions and approval routing in partnership with PD, Operations, Finance, and Business Development.

  • Partner with Product Development Managers and functional leaders to resolve business and financial issues affecting program execution (scope tradeoffs, cost drivers, capacity constraints, and customer expectations), including pricing and margin impacts.

  • Build the systems, templates, and operating cadence for quoting and commercial governance (quote calculators, assumptions library, approval workflow, version control), and track key commercial metrics (pricing, cost/margin, forecasts, change control, and profitability at launch).

  • Lead customer-facing commercial discussions for active PD programs (with Business Development, as needed), including quote reviews, pricing changes, and customer-ready rescope/change proposals.

This role will also drive process and system improvements across scoping, quoting, prototyping, and stage-gate governance, including recommendations for tooling and data integrity. The Senior Director will define and recommend appropriate staffing, roles, and capabilities for the Commercial Product Development team to meet portfolio demands.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Lead the commercial workstream for active PD programs across multiple sites and technologies: define quote strategy, align scope/assumptions, and drive timely customer-ready quotes and proposal packages.

  • Engage directly with customers and internal Project Managers to confirm technical, inspection, quality, and documentation requirements; own commercial alignment, including quote assumptions, change-control triggers, and pricing impacts.

  • Own the quote build: validate part costing and margin assumptions using process flows, yields, labor, overhead, materials, and other cost drivers; set pricing and obtain required internal approvals.

  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of Confluent's capabilities and constraints to accurately assess resource needs (engineering, operations, quality, suppliers) and investment requirements.

  • Coordinate cross-functionally (PD, Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, Finance, and Business Development) to ensure quote inputs are complete and accurate and that quotes/rescopes are delivered to the customer on time.

  • Ensure stage-gate readiness and a seamless transition into execution, including a clear PSR baseline, an approved quote/pricing baseline, defined re-quote triggers, and alignment on success metrics through launch and production transfer.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • BS required (MS preferred) in an engineering discipline (mechanical, biomedical, or similar) or equivalent combination of technical and commercial experience in medical devices.

  • Prior people leadership experience preferred (building teams, setting operating cadence, coaching, and performance management).

  • 15+ years of experience in medical device product development and/or OEM/contract manufacturing environments; catheter and balloon development experience strongly preferred.

  • Experience owning pricing and quoting for OEM-facing development programs, including scoping, quote construction, approvals, customer negotiations, and rescoping/change control; comfort with financial models (cost, margin, NPV/ROI) preferred.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Strategic and proactive thinker who can translate ambiguity into decisions, priorities, and executable plans.

  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, and presentation) with the ability to influence at all levels internally and with customers.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and align stakeholders around scope, timing, and financial outcomes.

  • Execution orientation-strong planning, follow-through, and accountability to measurable results.

  • Strong customer-facing skills, including discovery, expectation-setting, negotiation, and change-control management across development phases.

  • Highly collaborative; able to partner with PD, Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, Finance, and Business Development to deliver on customer commitments.

  • Strong conflict resolution and facilitation skills; able to drive decisions while maintaining relationships.

  • Strong business acumen with comfort in financial analysis (cost/margin drivers, investment cases, and portfolio tradeoffs).

  • Ability to manage a heavy workflow and multiple programs simultaneously, using clear prioritization and data-driven decision-making.

  • Continuous improvement mindset-able to improve processes, develop tools, and build a positive, high-accountability culture.

  • Ability to travel up to 40% of time
