Job description

The Regulatory Coordinator provides cross-functional coordination and compliance support to SM Energy's Regulatory and Land teams, with additional support to Operations, for oil and gas activity in the Uinta Basin. This role tracks and helps administer the company's obligations under federal, and state (Utah DOGM) frameworks, and supports permitting, filings, contracting coordination, and inspection readiness across those areas.

This is primarily a Regulatory and Land support role. Coordination with regulatory agency offices and community stakeholders is one component of the role's broader compliance and administrative responsibilities, not its primary function.

Key Responsibilities

Regulatory Support

  • Track and support preparation of regulatory filings and notices, including Sundry Notices, APDs, and related submissions, for wells on fee, federal, and Indian leases.
  • Monitor compliance touchpoints, including coordination with the BLM Vernal Field Office and awareness of any applicable regulatory provisions.
  • Support preparation of compliance documentation, inspection readiness, and coordination of compliance spot checks.
  • Assist with recurring reporting obligations tied to tribal, state, and federal requirements.
  • Help track Incidents of Noncompliance (INCs), and flag compliance risk to Regulatory leadership.

Land Support

  • Assist the Land team in tracking Surface Use Agreements.

Operations Support

  • Coordinate between field operations and the Regulatory/Land teams on compliance matters, including site security, measurement, flaring/venting notifications, and produced water disposal.
  • Help field staff understand applicable BLM, and State requirements for Uinta Basin activity.

Relationship & Community Coordination (supporting)

  • Maintain awareness of tribal government activity, events, and community expectations relevant to SM Energy's operations.
  • Support Regulatory and Land leadership in maintaining constructive working relationships with BLM, and State, and Tribal Agencies
  • Represent SM Energy at community meetings as directed by Regulatory or Land leadership.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in oil and gas regulatory, land, compliance, or governmental affairs, or equivalent experience in local government, tribal governance, or community relations.
  • Ability to learn and apply all regulatory requirements governing oil and gas operations in the Uinta Basin.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple filing deadlines, permits, and compliance trackers across functional teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to work collaboratively across Regulatory, Land, and Operations.
  • Ability to travel within the Uinta Basin and attend field, and community meetings as needed.

Preferred

  • Established relationships within the local and broader Uintah Basin community.
  • Experience with local government, permitting, or public affairs in the Uintah Basin region.
