How much do professional organizing jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 31, 2026, the average hourly pay for professional organizing in the United States is $18.85, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.38 and $20.67 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a professional organizer do?

Professional organizers help individuals and businesses declutter, arrange, and optimize spaces to improve efficiency and reduce stress. They assess clients' needs, develop customized organizing systems, and often provide hands-on assistance in sorting and categorizing items. Their work can include organizing homes, offices, digital files, and even time management systems. Professional organizers also offer guidance on maintaining organization and may recommend tools or products to support ongoing order.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a professional organizer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Professional Organizer, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of space optimization principles, often supported by relevant training or certification such as CPO (Certified Professional Organizer). Familiarity with project management tools, inventory systems, and digital organization platforms is commonly required. Excellent communication, empathy, and problem-solving abilities help build trust with clients and adapt solutions to their unique needs. These skills enable organizers to deliver customized, efficient results that improve clients’ productivity and well-being.

What are some common challenges professional organizers face when working with clients, and how can these be addressed?

Professional organizers often encounter clients who feel overwhelmed by clutter or are emotionally attached to their belongings. Building trust and demonstrating empathy are essential in these situations. Organizers should use clear communication and step-by-step plans to guide clients through the decluttering process, helping them make decisions at their own pace. Flexibility and patience are key, as each client’s needs and pace will vary. Collaborating closely ensures clients feel supported and helps achieve lasting organizational results.

What is the difference between Professional Organizing vs Professional Decluttering Specialist?

AspectProfessional OrganizingProfessional Decluttering Specialist
CertificationsOften holds certifications like NAPO or ICDMay have similar certifications but focuses more on decluttering techniques
Work EnvironmentWorks in homes, offices, storage spacesPrimarily in residential settings, focusing on decluttering
Job FocusOrganizing entire spaces, systems, and workflowsRemoving unnecessary items to reduce clutter
Industry UsageCommonly used in home and office organizationOften used interchangeably but emphasizes decluttering

While both roles aim to improve space efficiency, Professional Organizing involves creating organized systems and workflows, whereas a Professional Decluttering Specialist primarily focuses on removing excess items to reduce clutter. The two often overlap but differ in scope and approach.

How do you become a professional organizer?

To become a professional organizer, individuals typically gain experience in organizing, develop strong organizational and communication skills, and may pursue certification through organizations like the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals (NAPO). Building a portfolio, marketing services, and establishing a schedule are also important steps in starting this career.

Is there a demand for professional organizers?

The demand for professional organizers has grown as people seek help with decluttering and space management, especially in busy or urban environments. Opportunities exist in residential, commercial, and virtual organizing, often requiring strong organizational skills and certifications. The profession is expected to continue expanding as awareness of the benefits of organized spaces increases.

What do professional organizers get paid?

Professional organizers typically earn between $25 and $75 per hour, with annual salaries ranging from $30,000 to $70,000 depending on experience, location, and client base. Many work independently and may set their own rates, often requiring organizational skills and certifications to increase earning potential.

What jobs can I do if I like professional organizing?

If you enjoy professional organizing, you can pursue careers such as organizing consultant, home organizer, office organizer, or organizer for moving companies. These roles often require strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and sometimes certification in professional organizing. Opportunities exist in residential, commercial, and specialty organizing environments.

In-Home Design Consultant - Kitchen & Pantry Solutions

ShelfGenie of Lexington

Lexington, KY • On-site

Full-time

Re-posted 8 days ago

Job description

ShelfGenie is looking for an energetic, organized, and relationship-focused Design Consultant to help homeowners create beautiful, functional kitchens, pantries, laundry rooms, and bathrooms using our custom pull-out shelving systems.

This isn't a retail sales job and it isn't cold calling. We provide qualified appointments—you focus on listening to homeowners, designing customized solutions, and delivering an exceptional experience from consultation through the sale.

If you enjoy interior design, problem-solving, meeting new people, and have confidence helping customers make important decisions, we'd love to meet you.

What Makes This Opportunity Different

This is not a traditional retail position or a cold-calling role.

You will meet with homeowners during scheduled in-home consultations, learn how they use their space, and design customized ShelfGenie solutions based on their needs.

You will have the opportunity to build relationships, use creativity, and earn uncapped commission based on your results.

What You'll Do

  • Meet homeowners in their homes for scheduled consultations
  • Understand how each family uses their space
  • Measure cabinets accurately
  • Design custom pull-out shelving solutions
  • Present pricing and confidently ask for the sale
  • Coordinate with our installation team
  • Deliver an exceptional customer experience from first meeting through installation
  • Build referral relationships with happy customers

Who Thrives Here

You might be perfect if you've worked in:

  • Furniture sales
  • Interior design
  • Kitchen & bath design
  • Home improvement sales
  • Real estate
  • Professional organizing
  • Luxury retail
  • Remodeling

You do not need cabinet experience.

We'll teach you everything about our products.

Who We’re Looking For

Previous sales or design experience is not required.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Enjoys working directly with homeowners
  • Communicates warmly and professionally
  • Is comfortable learning how to sell through consultation
  • Is dependable and follows through on commitments
  • Pays close attention to measurements and details
  • Is comfortable using a tablet, computer, and digital tools
  • Can manage appointments and work independently
  • Is motivated by commission-based earning potential
  • Is coachable and willing to follow a proven process
  • Has an interest in home organization, design, remodeling, or improving everyday spaces

Experience in furniture, home improvement, real estate, retail, hospitality, professional organizing, customer service, or interior design may be helpful, but it is not required.

Compensation

This is a commission-only opportunity with uncapped earning potential.

Compensation is based on completed sales and individual performance. Specific commission details and expectations will be discussed during the interview process.

Because earnings are performance-based, this role is best suited for someone who is motivated, self-directed, and comfortable being rewarded for results.

Schedule and Travel

This is a field-based role serving homeowners throughout Lexington and the surrounding Central Kentucky area.

Appointments may occur during weekdays, evenings, or occasional weekends based on customer availability. The consultant must have reliable transportation and be comfortable traveling to clients’ homes.

Training and Support

ShelfGenie provides training in:

  • ShelfGenie products and solutions
  • In-home consultation techniques
  • Measuring and designing spaces
  • Presenting recommendations and pricing
  • Technology and company systems
  • Customer follow-up
  • Consultative selling

You will be supported as you learn the role, but you should also be comfortable taking ownership of your schedule, follow-up, and results.

Our mission is simple:

If helping people improve their homes sounds exciting—and you enjoy building relationships more than high-pressure selling—we'd love to hear from you.
