General Purpose
Reporting to the Manager, Business Career Development Centre (BCDC), within the Lang School of Business and Economics, the Student Engagement and Professional Development Advisor plays a key role in supporting the career development, leadership growth, and professional success of undergraduate and graduate business students through student leadership development, employer engagement, and the delivery of professional development programming. The Advisor helps students build the knowledge, skills, and experiences needed to successfully transition into meaningful careers.
The Advisor serves as the primary resource for LANG student organizations, partnering with student leaders to strengthen governance, leadership, employer engagement, and professional development initiatives that enhance the co-curricular student experience. The position also develops and maintains relationships with employers, alumni, faculty, and community partners to expand sponsorship, networking, mentorship, experiential learning, and employment opportunities for students.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Advise and support Lang student organizations, including the LANG Student Association and Affiliated Student Organizations, in the planning and delivery of leadership, employer engagement, and career development initiatives.
- Develop and cultivate relationships with employers, alumni, faculty, and industry partners to increase experiential learning, networking, mentorship, club sponsorship, and employment opportunities for students and student groups.
- Design, deliver, and evaluate career education, professional skills, and technical skills programming that reflects current and emerging labour market trends.
- Attend and provide program-specific career development support to students during career/job fairs, panel and networking events and student club initiatives.
- Provide one-on-one career advising to undergraduate, graduate, and alumni clients on job search strategies, creating targeted self-marketing materials, career decision-making, and professional development planning.
- Provide direct assistance to students with preparation of resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn profiles and interview skills.
- Collaborate with BCDC staff in the planning, coordination, and delivery of the Lang Case Competition program, including providing training, resources, and ongoing support to student case teams preparing to represent the Lang School of Business & Economics at regional, national, and international competitions.
- Support the development, implementation, and growth of the Lang mentorship program, including designing program processes, coordinating mentor and mentee engagement, and fostering meaningful connections between students and alumni.
- Research, source, and develop professional development programming that builds students' career readiness, including technical skills training, workplace expectations, professional standards workshops, certifications, and micro-credential opportunities.
- Represent the BCDC and LANG at University-wide recruitment events and provide career-related information to prospective students and parents.
Requirements
- Completion of a Bachelor's degree in business or a related discipline plus a minimum of 3 years of experience in early talent recruitment, learning and development or career development preferred.
- Proven ability to build and maintain effective relationships and/or success in business development.
- Understanding of recruitment cycles for new graduate roles in business-focused industries.
- Career advising skills to effectively assess student needs, career outcomes and goals.
- Excellent communication skills, both in listening and relaying information.
- Highly developed presentation and group facilitation skills to speak publicly.
- Well-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills; with the ability to establish rapport with students, employers, and faculty/staff.
- Knowledge of current occupational, educational and employment opportunities and be cognizant of present and future labour market trends; including professional business-specific designations/certifications.
- Strong commitment to providing excellent client service and being an effective team player.
- Demonstrated professionalism and ability to handle confidential and sensitive material with tact and diplomacy, exercise discretion and judgement at all times.
- An understanding of LANG's academic programs, university policies and procedures, and administrative systems will be considered an asset.
