Professional Development information

What is professional development?

Professional development refers to the ongoing process of acquiring new skills, knowledge, and experience to enhance one's career performance and growth. It typically includes activities such as attending workshops, seminars, conferences, pursuing advanced degrees, or completing certifications. The goal of professional development is to keep professionals up-to-date with industry trends, improve job performance, and help them achieve career advancement. Many employers encourage or require professional development to ensure their workforce remains competitive and effective.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a professional development specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Professional Development Specialist, you need expertise in adult learning principles, curriculum design, and instructional strategies, often supported by a degree in education or a related field. Familiarity with Learning Management Systems (LMS), e-learning authoring tools, and relevant certifications such as CPLP or ATD are typically required. Strong communication, facilitation, and organizational skills help you effectively engage participants and manage multiple training initiatives. These skills are crucial for designing impactful development programs that enhance employee performance and support organizational growth.

How do professionals in a professional development role typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Professionals in a Professional Development role often work closely with HR, department managers, and team leaders to identify training needs and design effective learning programs. They regularly consult with subject matter experts to tailor content relevant to specific teams and may facilitate cross-departmental workshops or initiatives. This collaborative approach ensures that development programs are aligned with organizational goals and that employees at all levels receive the support they need to grow and succeed.

What is the difference between Professional Development vs Training?

Job description

Reporting to the Manager, Sales Development the Sales Development Representative (SDR) plays a critical role within the Sales team by identifying new business opportunities, engaging prospective clients, and building a strong pipeline of qualified leads. This role exists to drive revenue growth by expanding Voices' reach into new markets, strengthening relationships with potential customers, and supporting the acquisition of new hiring managers and client accounts. Through proactive outreach, market research, relationship-building, and close collaboration with Sales and Marketing teams, the SDR helps accelerate business growth and position Voices as a trusted partner in the voice-over and creative services industry.

How You'll Contribute

The following areas represent the primary focus of the role, though responsibilities may evolve over time. You’ll be expected to take ownership of these functions while remaining adaptable to changing business needs and priorities:

  • Generate a Consistent Pipeline of Qualified Opportunities: Identify, research, and engage prospective clients through outbound prospecting efforts, creating a steady flow of qualified opportunities that support revenue growth and business expansion.

  • Expand Relationships with New and Existing Clients: Build meaningful connections with hiring managers and decision-makers, helping uncover new opportunities within existing accounts while introducing Voices to new organizations and markets.

  • Increase Revenue Through Strategic Prospecting: Leverage phone outreach, email campaigns, social selling, networking, and lead intelligence tools to connect with high-potential prospects and convert interest into sales opportunities.

  • Strengthen the Sales Funnel Through Effective Lead Nurturing: Guide prospects through the early stages of the buyer journey by understanding business challenges, addressing questions, and delivering relevant information that supports purchasing decisions.

  • Deliver Actionable Market and Customer Insights: Monitor industry trends, competitor activity, and customer feedback to provide valuable insights that inform sales strategies, marketing initiatives, and product development decisions.

  • Drive Operational Excellence Through Data and Collaboration: Maintain accurate CRM records, track pipeline activity, and collaborate closely with Sales and Marketing teams to ensure seamless lead handoffs, reporting accuracy, and continuous process improvement.

What You Bring

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Experience: Experience in a sales, business development, lead generation, or customer-facing role with a demonstrated ability to achieve performance targets. Experience engaging with or selling to enterprise-level customers is strongly preferred. Experience conducting outbound prospecting, building relationships with prospective customers, qualifying leads, and managing pipeline activity is highly valued. Familiarity with CRM platforms (such as Salesforce) and sales engagement tools is considered an asset. Familiarity with LinkedIn, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, and virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams is preferred.

  • The Mindset: A driven, resilient, and relationship-oriented professional who enjoys connecting with people and uncovering new opportunities. You are confident in initiating conversations, motivated by achieving goals, curious about customer needs, and energized by working in a fast-paced environment. You combine strong communication skills with a collaborative approach and a commitment to continuous improvement.

  • Core Qualifications: Post-secondary education in Business, Marketing, Communications, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience. Strong communication, relationship-building, customer focus, and collaboration skills are essential for success in this role.

Why Join Us
  • Compensation: For sales roles, $105,000–$125,000 reflects total On Target Earnings (OTE), which includes both base salary and target commissions.

  • Growth: We invest in your long-term success. Gain access to a dedicated professional development budget and premium online learning platforms, backed by transparent career pathways and robust internal mobility.

  • Flexibility: We're remote-led. Ontario-based employees have a baseline of one in-office collaboration day per month at our London, Ontario HQ, while attendance for distributed employees will be determined based on specific team or project needs.

  • Wellness: We support your life inside and outside of work. Enjoy comprehensive health, dental, and retirement plans, alongside mindfulness tools, volunteer leave, and generous paid time off.
