Job description

Substitute Bus Driver

The goal of this position is to work under the general supervision of the Director of Transportation, the Bus Driver has the primary responsibility for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of the children, staff and volunteers during bus transportation.

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to execute each requirement satisfactorily. The requirements list below are a representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability needed for the position.

  1. Ensures the safety and well-being of children and adults being transported to and from the program and on field trips.
  2. Successful experience as a School Bus Driver preferred.
  3. Effective oral and written communication skills commensurate with the responsibilities of the position are required.
  4. Must have effective organizational, problem solving, and time management skills.
  5. Ability to learn and comprehend information from Procedure Manuals and other materials.
  6. Ability to comprehend and follow traffic signs required. Must be able to physically move through the bus.
  7. Ability to perform responsibilities under pressure and in cases of accidents or other emergencies.
  8. Successful experience working as an effective member of a team desirable.
  9. Ability to present a positive image of the organization to members of the community.
  10. Visual and auditory acuity within professionally determined normal ranges, with correction if needed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Completes the required daily reporting.
  2. Ensures that the communication device (e.g., two-way radio, cellular phone) is in proper working order before each trip.
  3. Ensures that the bus always has sufficient fuel.
  4. Operates bus in such a way that road and safety regulations are always followed; reports any traffic violations to the Director immediately.
  5. With the assistance of Bus Aides, ensures all children are in age-appropriate child safety restraints at all times during transportation.
  6. With the assistance of the Bus Aides, follows safe bus loading and unloading procedures.
  7. Follows procedures to guarantee no child is left alone on bus without adult supervision at any time, including insuring all children have departed bus at the end of all bus routes (morning, evening and during field trips or other special trips).
  8. Keeps the bus clean and free of debris; follows other bus cleaning procedures.
  9. Routinely inventories bus emergency and first aid supplies and equipment, reports needs to the Director, or delegated staff person.
  10. Prepares aides and children for bus drills and ensures bus evacuation drills are held at least monthly. Documents all drills in writing.
  11. Assists in other transportation training of bus aides, teachers, children and volunteers.
  12. In case of accidents/emergencies, evacuates children according to written and practiced procedures.
  13. In the event of an accident, assures that medical emergency procedures are followed; completes a written accident report as required by delegate's procedure and other authorities.
  14. Attends and participates in center pre-service and in-service trainings, and other continuing education, career and professional development opportunities.
  15. Participates in the agency's self-evaluation process.
  16. Performs other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications / Certificates, Licenses, Registrations, Bonding, and or Testing Required

  1. Possess a current Commercial Driver's License (CDL), hold a current School Bus Driver's Permit, and be certified in First Aid and CPR for all age groups transported.
  2. Ability to pass an annual School Bus Driver's physical.
  3. Must be able to comply with background check, including fingerprints, as required by the School District and/or Colorado Department of Education.
  4. Regular access to a reliable vehicle; have a valid Colorado driver's license and vehicle insurance.

Physical Demands Manual dexterity sufficient to operate the bus, conduct pre-trip inspections, and clean the bus. Ability to lift 55 pounds is required.

Work Environment The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential duties and responsibilities of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 degrees and below 32 degrees and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with public and other employees. The employee has direct responsibility for the safety and well-being of others. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Days / Terms of Employment: 151 Days / Nine-month position. Salary to be determined by the School Board of Education.
