What is product sustainability?

Product sustainability refers to designing, manufacturing, using, and disposing of products in ways that minimize negative impacts on the environment, society, and economy throughout the product's entire lifecycle. This involves using eco-friendly materials, reducing waste and energy consumption, and considering the social and ethical aspects of production. The goal is to create products that meet present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs.

How does a product sustainability professional typically collaborate with other departments to drive eco-friendly initiatives?

Product Sustainability professionals frequently work cross-functionally, partnering with design, engineering, procurement, and marketing teams to integrate sustainable practices throughout the product lifecycle. This collaboration often involves evaluating materials, setting sustainability benchmarks, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. Effective communication and stakeholder engagement are key to successfully implementing green initiatives and overcoming resistance to change. By working closely with various departments, they help align organizational goals with sustainability objectives and foster a culture of environmental responsibility.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product sustainability specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Sustainability Specialist, you need expertise in environmental science, product lifecycle analysis, and sustainability standards, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with tools like Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) software, environmental impact databases, and compliance systems is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, stakeholder communication, and project management skills help you drive sustainable initiatives and collaborate across teams. These competencies are crucial for ensuring products meet regulatory requirements, minimize environmental impact, and align with organizational sustainability goals.

What is the difference between Product Sustainability vs Product Compliance?

Job description

Worthington Enterprises | Amtrol
Worthington Enterprises | Amtrol designs, manufactures, and distributes pressure vessels, expansion tanks, well tanks, and water system solutions for residential, commercial, industrial, and OEM markets. The facility supports new product development, engineering, manufacturing, and distribution, delivering high-quality products that improve water quality, pressure management, and system reliability for customers across North America.
Product Sustaining Engineer
The Product Sustaining Engineer is responsible for providing engineering support for the existing Amtrol product portfolio, ensuring products, drawings, specifications, bills of material, and engineering documentation accurately reflect design intent, manufacturing requirements, and customer expectations. The role serves as a critical link between Product Engineering, Operations, Quality, Purchasing, Commercial, and other cross-functional partners to sustain product availability, quality, manufacturability, and total customer experience.
The Product Sustaining Engineer translates product and customer requirements into accurate and executable engineering documentation, with significant responsibility for drafting, Engineering Change Order (ECO) execution, product-data management, and resolution of production and supplier-related product issues. The position supports both residential and commercial products while identifying opportunities to improve product design, documentation, manufacturability, cost, quality, and engineering processes
The role will also support New Product Development (NPD) activities as required to ensure effective transition of new products and components into production.
Primary Responsibilities
Product Design, Drafting & Documentation
  • Lead drafting and design-documentation activities for existing residential products while supporting commercial product needs as required.
  • Create and modify 3D models, 2D drawings, component specifications, subassemblies, and finished-good drawings to accurately reflect product and customer requirements.
  • Maintain engineering drawings, specifications, bills of material, and related technical documentation throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Create redline drawings and bills of material necessary to support engineering changes.
  • Create and modify REVIT files as required to support product and commercial needs.

Engineering Change Management
  • Lead Engineering Change Order (ECO) activities for assigned product families, driving accuracy, completeness, and timely implementation.
  • Identify and resolve documentation gaps, legacy drawing issues, and product-data discrepancies that could impact production, sourcing, quality, or the customer.
  • Support continuous improvement of the ECO process to improve first-pass accuracy, cycle time, and implementation effectiveness.

Manufacturing, Quality & Supplier Support
  • Serve as a technical engineering resource to Operations and Quality for product-related design, application, and manufacturing concerns.
  • Support PPAP submissions and rejections from a product-design perspective, ensuring drawing specifications and actual product requirements are aligned.
  • Collaborate with Quality and Operations to resolve non-conforming components, materials, and processes and minimize production disruption.

Engineering Systems & Process Ownership
  • Serve as an onsite PDM subject-matter expert, supporting engineering-team needs, product documentation, and effective system utilization.
  • Serve as an onsite Wrike subject-matter expert, supporting project execution, workflow management, and team adoption.
  • Maintain disciplined engineering-document control and ensure current product information is accessible to appropriate stakeholders.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, or related technical discipline preferred; equivalent technical education and relevant engineering/design experience may be considered.
  • Strong drafting and mechanical-design capabilities with demonstrated ability to create and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and bills of material.
  • Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks with experience creating and modifying 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and ability to create or modify REVIT files preferred.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design fundamentals, manufacturing processes, tolerances, materials, and design-for-manufacturability principles.
  • Experience with PDM/product-data-management systems and engineering-document control.
  • Strong computer skills, including SolidWorks, PDM, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, Wrike, and related engineering/business systems.

Leadership Traits for Success
  • Technical Ownership: Takes responsibility for the accuracy and completeness of engineering documentation and follows issues through implementation and resolution.
  • Detail-Oriented Problem Solver: Demonstrates strong attention to detail while applying sound engineering judgment to drawings, specifications, manufacturing issues, and product requirements.
  • Cross-Functional Partner: Communicates effectively and builds strong working relationships across Engineering, Operations, Quality, Purchasing, Commercial, and other functions to move work forward.
