Job description

At Mudflap, we're modernizing the $1 trillion trucking industry, the backbone of the U.S. economy. By helping over 100,000 underserved small businesses save over $1 billion on fuel, Mudflap has quickly grown into a profitable fintech platform that processes billions in annual payment volume.
As the Sr. Product Manager, Risk, you'll own Mudflap's identity and fraud platform end to end, shaping how the company verifies who it's doing business with and protects the marketplace from bad actors. The focus is on strengthening KYC and KYB processes, managing fraud detection systems, and evolving vendor relationships that support identity verification, all while balancing rigor with a smooth onboarding experience for legitimate carriers and drivers.
Success in this role requires strong product judgment, a deep understanding of identity verification and fraud patterns, and the ability to navigate tradeoffs like risk versus friction. It combines strategic thinking with hands on execution, using transaction level data and fraud signals to identify high impact opportunities and continuously evolve how Mudflap protects its marketplace.
Work Location: This role is based in Palo Alto, CA and involves a hybrid work approach, balancing in-office collaboration with the ability to work remotely.
To support our team, we offer:
  • Commuter benefits to ease your travel
  • Lunches and snacks to keep you fueled
  • A collaborative, high-growth environment where you'll work closely with talented teammates across the company

Expectations (In this role, you will):
  • Be the subject matter expert on both external and internal platforms and tools when it comes to KYC, KYB, identity, and fraud
  • Define the strategy and roadmap for risk infrastructure and technologies used at Mudflap
  • Partner with Engineering and Data Science to develop and execute a test-driven Machine Learning (ML) strategy for risk mitigation
  • Act as the voice of the customer when it comes to risk tools and design, gathering direct feedback from customers
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to understand and define the risk strategy and optimize risk operations
  • Understand customer and external partner risk needs, and work with internal product owners to deliver effective risk tools across all product areas (mobile/web apps, APIs, etc)
  • Synthesize complex information and strategic inputs, write clear requirements, and communicate effectively to technical and non-technical business partners
  • Own the end-to-end product lifecycle from ideation to launch, and be accountable for ongoing success criteria and metrics

Experience (What we look for):
  • A proven track record of building and scaling successful products
  • Comprehensive, hands-on experience across identity, KYC, KYB, vendor management, and fraud detection, not narrowly scoped to one piece (e.g. authentication alone)
  • Strong understanding of fraud patterns in eCommerce or fintech products
  • Comfort operating with ambiguity and incomplete information under time pressure
  • A proven track record building and scaling products, mobile and web, in a fast-paced environment
  • A data-savvy mindset with the SQL skills to complement it
  • A detail-oriented approach to conducting deep dives into emerging fraud trends and recommending appropriate mitigation strategies

Please note: We are unable to provide employment visa sponsorship or transfer existing employment visa sponsorship for this position at this time.
Perks and Benefits (What we offer):
  • Competitive salary and equity in a high-growth startup
  • Multiple health benefit options
  • Responsible Time Off
  • 401(k) matching
  • Opportunities and support for major career growth
  • Annual Company offsite event (Mudfest!)

The salary range for this role is $195,000-$215,000 + equity. This information reflects a base salary range for this position based on current market data, which may be subject to change as new market data becomes available. The candidate's skills, experience, and other relevant factors will determine the exact compensation.
Company Overview (Who we are):
Mudflap is on a mission to transform the trucking and logistics industry by leveling the playing field for owner operators and small fleets. Backed by top-tier venture investors, including QED, Matrix Partners, Commerce Ventures, NFX, and 500 Startups and included in the Forbes Fintech 50 list, Mudflap offers fleet fuel management solutions. Our core team hails from Disney, Uber, Procore, DoorDash, Google, Meta, Capital One, Affirm and Brex.
Here are the core values that we believe in and look for in new teammates:
  • Be Customer Obsessed: We deeply understand customer needs and put our customers at the center of everything we do
  • Make it Count: Act like an owner by focusing on the impact of your work
  • Find a Way: Be a creative problem solver who pushes past roadblocks to win for our customers and our teammates
  • Sweat the Details: We keep our standards high and achieve them by paying attention to every detail
  • Be Curious: Use a growth mindset to question assumptions, take calculated risks and stretch the boundaries of what's possible
