What is product stewardship?

Product stewardship is an approach in which everyone involved in the lifecycle of a product, including manufacturers, retailers, users, and disposers, takes responsibility for minimizing the product’s environmental, health, and safety impacts. This includes designing safer products, reducing waste, ensuring proper recycling or disposal, and complying with regulations. Product stewardship aims to reduce the overall impact of products on people and the planet by considering these factors from design through end-of-life.

What are product stewardship jobs?

Product stewardship jobs involve ensuring that the manufacture, sale, and use of a product does not have an impact on the environment or the health and safety of users and others. Product stewardship professionals focus on all parts of a product's life cycle from production to end of life. The duties of a product stewardship specialist involve collecting relevant environmental and safety data. A product stewardship engineer helps design a plan to limit adverse effects during the product life cycle. Your responsibilities often include handling regulatory affairs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product stewardship professional?

To thrive as a Product Stewardship professional, you need a thorough understanding of regulatory compliance, product safety standards, and environmental science, often supported by a degree in chemistry, environmental science, or a related field. Familiarity with compliance management systems, chemical inventory databases, and global regulations such as REACH or TSCA is typically required. Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to collaborate across departments help drive effective product compliance strategies. These skills and qualities are essential to ensure products meet legal requirements, protect human health and the environment, and minimize organizational risk.

What are the most common challenges faced by professionals in product stewardship roles?

Product Stewardship professionals often navigate complex regulatory environments and must stay current with evolving global standards related to safety, environmental impact, and compliance. A key challenge is coordinating across multiple departments—such as R&D, legal, and supply chain—to gather accurate product data and ensure compliance throughout a product’s lifecycle. Additionally, managing product documentation and communicating requirements to both internal teams and external stakeholders requires strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
