What is a product stewardship manager?

Product Stewardship Managers are professionals responsible for ensuring that a company's products are designed, produced, used, and disposed of in an environmentally responsible and legally compliant manner. They manage compliance with regulations related to product safety, chemical management, labeling, and recycling. Their role often involves collaborating with product development, supply chain, and regulatory teams to minimize environmental and health impacts throughout a product's lifecycle. Product Stewardship Managers also help communicate sustainability initiatives and may work on improving the overall environmental footprint of their company's offerings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product stewardship manager?

To thrive as a Product Stewardship Manager, you need a strong background in regulatory compliance, environmental science, and product lifecycle management, often supported by a relevant degree such as chemistry, engineering, or environmental studies. Familiarity with global regulatory systems (e.g., REACH, TSCA), safety data sheet (SDS) authoring tools, and sustainability certifications is typically required. Excellent project management, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills help you collaborate across departments and ensure compliance. These abilities are crucial for minimizing regulatory risks, maintaining market access, and supporting sustainable product strategies.

What are some common challenges faced by product stewardship managers when ensuring product compliance across multiple regions?

Product Stewardship Managers often face the challenge of navigating complex and constantly evolving regulatory landscapes across different markets. Each region may have unique environmental, health, and safety requirements, making it crucial to stay updated on global standards and coordinate compliance efforts across teams. Effective communication with cross-functional departments—such as R&D, legal, and supply chain—is essential to gather accurate product data and implement necessary changes. Proactively managing these collaborations helps to minimize risks, avoid costly delays, and maintain the company’s reputation.
