What is a product management fellow?

A Product Management Fellow is typically an early-career professional or recent graduate selected for a specialized program designed to provide hands-on experience and training in product management. These fellowships often involve mentorship, exposure to various aspects of product development, and opportunities to work on real projects within a company or organization. The goal is to prepare fellows for future roles as product managers by building their skills in market research, product strategy, user experience, and cross-functional collaboration. Programs may vary in length and structure but are generally competitive and aimed at fostering the next generation of product leaders.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a product management fellow expect to handle during their fellowship?

As a Product Management Fellow, you can expect to work on a variety of projects that span the product development lifecycle, including market research, user testing, drafting product requirements, and collaborating with engineering and design teams. Fellows often support senior product managers by assisting in backlog prioritization, analyzing user feedback, and tracking key performance metrics. This hands-on exposure provides an excellent opportunity to develop a broad skill set while contributing meaningful work to the product’s evolution. The role is highly collaborative, and fellows are typically encouraged to participate in cross-functional meetings and present their findings or recommendations to stakeholders. This structure helps build a strong foundation for a long-term career in product management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product management fellow, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Management Fellow, you need a solid understanding of product development, market research, and business strategy, often supported by a relevant degree or prior internship experience. Familiarity with tools like JIRA, product analytics platforms, and wireframing software is commonly required. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and collaboration skills help you work effectively across teams and advocate for user needs. These skills are crucial for successfully guiding products from concept to launch and ensuring they meet business and user objectives.

As the Digital Product Fellow, you will drive the strategy, development, and execution of innovative digital products that deliver value to both our customers and the business. You will lead cross-functional teams to define, build, and launch digital experiences that align with company goals and meet user needs. You will leverage your expertise in product strategy, customer insights, and market analysis to shape the direction of our digital product offerings. This role requires strong leadership, strategic thinking, and a passion for delivering world-class products that have a significant impact on the business.

Essential Functions

  • Product Strategy and Roadmap: Define the product vision, strategy, and roadmap for digital products, ensuring alignment with the organization's long-term goals and customer needs. Prioritize product features and initiatives based on business value, customer impact, and technical feasibility.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Lead and collaborate with design, engineering, marketing, and data teams to deliver high-quality products on time and within budget. Ensure clear communication across all teams and drive consensus on product decisions.
  • Customer-Centric Focus: Conduct customer research, analyze market trends, and gather insights to inform product decisions. Advocate for the customer throughout the product development process, ensuring user needs are at the forefront of product strategy and design.
  • Product Lifecycle Management: Oversee the entire product lifecycle, from ideation and planning through to execution and post-launch analysis. Continuously evaluate product performance, gather user feedback, and iterate on product features to optimize user experience and business outcomes.
  • Data-Driven Decision Making: Use analytics and customer feedback to inform product decisions, identify growth opportunities, and assess the impact of product features. Establish and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the success of products and inform future product iterations.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Communication: Present product updates, strategies, and roadmaps to senior leadership and other stakeholders, ensuring alignment with business objectives. Communicate product decisions effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Mentorship and Leadership: Mentor junior product managers, helping them grow their skills in product management, strategic thinking, and cross-functional collaboration. Lead by example and create a positive, collaborative team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Set the strategic product direction for major portfolios, platforms, or lifecycle journeys
  • Operate across domains to solve foundational platform and architectural challenges
  • Act as an advisor to Directors, VPs, and cross-functional leaders on product strategy, execution, and vision
  • Define and evangelize standards for product thinking, planning, discovery, and delivery
  • Own long-horizon initiatives with high ambiguity and executive visibility
  • Represent product in enterprise transformation or modernization efforts
  • Coach group and principal PMs; raise the product bar org-wide

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep strategic thinking and ability to translate high-level business problems into product outcomes
  • Strong influence across executive stakeholders, engineers, designers, and commercial partners
  • Trusted voice in shaping team norms, investment strategy, and customer-first thinking
  • Proven record leading successful transformation, platform modernization, or net-new 01 product builds
  • Expertise in product operations, pricing, commercialization, or growth models
  • Recognized thought leader inside and outside the organization

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. In lieu of a degree, 10+ years of practical experience may offset education requirements

Minimum Experience

  • Experience managing complex, cross-functional product initiatives, particularly in a fast-paced, technology-driven organization.

  • Strong technical background, with the ability to engage in technical discussions and understand technical constraints and opportunities.

  • Experience in digital product management within e-commerce, SaaS, or similar industries.
