What is a product led growth?

A Product Led Growth (PLG) job focuses on driving business growth by leveraging the product as the primary driver of acquisition, retention, and expansion. Professionals in this role analyze user behavior, optimize onboarding experiences, and implement growth strategies within the product to enhance user engagement and conversion. They collaborate with teams across product, marketing, sales, and customer success to create a seamless user journey that encourages organic growth. PLG roles require strong analytical skills, a data-driven mindset, and a deep understanding of user experience. The goal is to reduce friction, increase adoption, and drive revenue by making the product itself the key engine for customer acquisition and retention.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in product led growth?

To excel in a Product Led Growth role, you need expertise in product management, data analysis, user experience optimization, and a solid understanding of SaaS business models. Familiarity with tools like Mixpanel, Amplitude, A/B testing platforms, and CRM systems is typically required, and certifications in product management or analytics are advantageous. Strong collaboration, analytical thinking, and clear communication enable professionals to align cross-functional teams and prioritize growth initiatives effectively. These skills are crucial for driving user acquisition, retention, and revenue growth by using the product as the main lever for business expansion.

What are the most common challenges someone faces in a product led growth role?

Professionals in Product Led Growth roles often encounter challenges such as balancing rapid experimentation with maintaining a consistent user experience, interpreting complex usage data to inform strategy, and collaborating effectively across product, engineering, sales, and marketing departments. It's essential to prioritize initiatives with the greatest impact, requiring strong analytical and decision-making skills. Regularly engaging with customer feedback and adapting the product roadmap are also key aspects of the job. Overcoming these challenges helps drive meaningful adoption and ensures the product remains the primary engine for sustainable growth.

What are examples of product led growth?

Product Led Growth (PLG) is a strategy where a company's product drives customer acquisition, retention, and expansion. Examples include freemium models, where users access basic features for free and upgrade for advanced features, and viral features that encourage sharing and word-of-mouth growth. Successful PLG companies often focus on user experience, self-service onboarding, and data-driven product improvements.

Product Manager, Growth

Luma

Redwood City, CA • On-site

$250K - $325K/yr

Full-time

Re-posted 9 days ago

Job description

You'll own growth end to end at Luma - acquisition, activation, retention, and revenue - scaling the product from strong early traction toward mass adoption, and defining how growth works here from first principles.
Growth at Luma runs across product, engineering, marketing, and data, and you'll operate with high velocity, imperfect data, and a bias to action. It fits an experiment-driven PM who's equally strategic and hands-on. If you need clean data and an established growth function to step into, this isn't that yet.
What You'll Own
  • Own and execute product-led growth across the full funnel, from acquisition to revenue.
  • Identify and prioritize high-leverage (80/20) opportunities that drive outsized growth.
  • Design and scale rapid experimentation loops across onboarding, activation, retention, and monetization.
  • Build repeatable, measurable growth loops, and improve first-time experience so users reach value fast.
  • Partner with marketing on paid acquisition, attribution, conversion, pricing, and packaging.
  • Work hands-on with engineering to prototype, ship, and iterate, making fast decisions with limited data.

First 90 Days
One way the first 90 could unfold.
  • Days 1-30 - Immerse & Diagnose: Map the funnel, find where growth breaks, and pick the first 80/20 bets.
  • Days 30-60 - Ship & Validate: Run experiments across activation and monetization and land measurable wins.
  • Days 60-90 - Scale & Systemize: Build repeatable growth loops and the experimentation cadence behind them.

What You Bring
  • 5-10+ years of product management with a strong growth focus.
  • A track record driving measurable growth (activation, retention, revenue).
  • Deep understanding of product-led growth, funnels, loops, and lifecycle optimization.
  • Strong intuition for high-leverage opportunities in ambiguous environments.
  • An experiment-driven mindset with A/B testing and rapid iteration.
  • Comfort operating strategically and tactically, with incomplete data.
  • Experience partnering with marketing on paid growth and attribution, familiarity with pricing and packaging, and the technical fluency to unblock execution.

Nice to Have
  • Experience building or growing products for creative professionals.
  • Familiarity with Figma, Canva, Adobe, or 3D/creative platforms.
  • Experience on AI-native products or in fast-moving startups.
