What is a product integrity?

A Product Integrity job focuses on ensuring that a company's products meet quality, safety, and regulatory standards. Professionals in this role work closely with engineering, manufacturing, and compliance teams to identify potential defects, improve design processes, and implement testing protocols. Their goal is to minimize risks, enhance reliability, and maintain customer trust. This role is common in industries such as electronics, automotive, medical devices, and consumer goods.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals in product integrity roles?

Professionals in Product Integrity often encounter challenges such as navigating evolving regulatory requirements, managing cross-departmental collaboration, and resolving unexpected quality issues during production or testing. They must stay vigilant about industry standards and rapidly adapt to process improvements while maintaining transparency with stakeholders. Balancing cost-effectiveness with uncompromising quality can also require creative problem-solving and strong negotiation skills. Successfully addressing these challenges helps ensure that products meet both internal and external standards of excellence, reducing risks for the company and its customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the product integrity position, and why are they important?

To excel in a Product Integrity role, a background in quality assurance, product testing procedures, and regulatory compliance is typically required, often supported by a degree in engineering, materials science, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like statistical analysis software, ERP systems, ISO standards, and certifications such as Six Sigma or ASQ are highly valued. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and effective cross-functional communication are key soft skills in this position. These capabilities ensure that products consistently meet quality standards, comply with regulations, and maintain the company's reputation for reliability.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Establish and own the quality strategy across all hardware and software subsystems, defining metrics, standards, and processes that align with missionโ€‘critical reliability requirements and regulatory frameworks (including space qualification standards and industry certifications)
  • Build and lead a worldโ€‘class quality organization, recruiting and developing engineers and specialists in reliability engineering, failure analysis, test engineering, and quality assurance; establish clear accountability and career pathways
  • Design and implement comprehensive reliability programs including FMEA, fault tree analysis, design reviews, and predictive analytics; ensure rigorous application across all development phases and supply chain partners
  • Drive test strategy and validation for both hardware and software, defining test plans, acceptance criteria, and qualification protocols; oversee test execution and data analysis to validate system performance under operational conditions
  • Lead rootโ€‘cause analysis and corrective action for field issues, manufacturing defects, and design anomalies; establish systemic improvements and track closure to prevent recurrence
  • Establish quality metrics and dashboards that provide realโ€‘time visibility into product health, manufacturing performance, and reliability trends; use data to inform engineering decisions and resource allocation
  • Partner with Product and Engineering leadership to balance quality rigor with development velocity; influence design decisions early to prevent costly rework and field failures
  • Manage supplier quality and supply chain reliability, establishing qualification criteria, audit programs, and performance monitoring for critical component suppliers
  • Ensure compliance with applicable standards, regulations, and customer requirements; maintain documentation and traceability for certification and audit purposes
  • Champion a quality culture across the organization through training, communication, and recognition; make quality everyone's responsibility, not just the quality team's
  • Oversee onโ€‘orbit reliability monitoring and anomaly management, working with operations and customer success teams to rapidly diagnose and resolve issues affecting deployed systems
  • Develop and execute continuous improvement initiatives using lean and Six Sigma methodologies; identify and eliminate waste, variability, and inefficiency in processes and products
Requirements
  • 15+ years of experience in hardware reliability, product integrity, or related engineering disciplines, with at least 8 years leading large technical organizations
  • Proven success owning reliability and safety for complex hardware programs from concept through highโ€‘volume production and field deployment
  • Deep technical expertise across semiconductors, SoCs, advanced packaging, displays, materials, connectors, mechanical assemblies, and systemโ€‘level architectures
  • Demonstrated experience leading failure analysis and rootโ€‘cause investigations for highโ€‘stakes field issues and product safety events
  • Strong background in designโ€‘forโ€‘reliability methodologies, including FMEA, accelerated life testing, physicsโ€‘ofโ€‘failure modeling, and statistical reliability analysis
  • Experience building and scaling reliability test and failureโ€‘analysis lab infrastructure across multiple geographies
  • Track record of partnering with manufacturing, supply chain, and quality teams to drive design transfer, qualification, and launch readiness at contract manufacturers
  • Ability to communicate technical risk and reliability data to executive leadership, partners, and external stakeholders to support business and investment decisions
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and peopleโ€‘leadership skills, with a track record of delivering on aggressive timelines in fastโ€‘paced environments
