What is product definition?

Product definition is the process of clearly outlining what a product is, who it is for, and what problems it solves. This involves gathering and analyzing customer needs, market research, and technical requirements to create a detailed description of the product's features, functions, and value proposition. The product definition acts as a blueprint for development teams and stakeholders, guiding the design, development, and launch of the product. It ensures everyone involved has a shared understanding of the product's goals and requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product definition specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Definition Specialist, you need a solid background in product design, requirements gathering, and market analysis, often supported by a degree in engineering, business, or a related field. Familiarity with product lifecycle management (PLM) software, wireframing tools, and technical documentation systems is typically required. Strong communication, attention to detail, and cross-functional collaboration skills set outstanding specialists apart. These competencies ensure that products are accurately defined, meet market needs, and are developed efficiently from concept to launch.

What is the difference between Product Definition vs Product Manager?

We are seeking a Product Definition Engineer to join our Performance Core Power team. This role sits at the intersection of customer systems, power architecture and semiconductor product development, helping translate next-generation processors and datacenter requirements into differentiated power-management solutions.
Job Description
You will work with engineering, applications, marketing, validation and customer teams to understand system-level power requirements and translate them into product and design requirements for next-generation voltage-regulation solutions.
The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in DC/DC power conversion and experience with high-current processors, ASIC or similar power-management applications. Prior experience may come from systems engineering, applications engineering, power electronics or semiconductor product development.
Key Responsibilities
  • Work with customers, partners and internal engineering teams to understand system-level power challenges and technical requirements.
  • Translate system and customer requirements into product specifications, engineering requirements and system use cases.
  • Contribute to voltage-regulator architecture and product definition for high-performance CPU, GPU, ASIC and other advanced computing platforms.
  • Partner with IC design, systems, firmware, validation and marketing teams to evaluate technical trade-offs, feature requirements and development schedules.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation including product requirements, system specifications, use cases and interface/API requirements.
  • Support system analysis, modeling and technical evaluation of new product concepts.

Qualifications
Required
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in power electronics, power-management semiconductors, applications engineering, systems engineering or related product development.
  • Experience translating system or customer requirements into actionable technical requirements or engineering specifications.
  • Strong written and verbal technical communication skills.
  • BS in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.

Preferred
  • Experience with digital multiphase buck converters, PWM controllers, Smart Power Stages, DrMOS or related processor power technologies.
  • Experience supporting server, datacenters, cloud or high-performance computing platforms.
  • Experience working with power-management ICs or semiconductor products.
  • Familiarity with Intel, AMD, ARM or other advanced processor ecosystems.
  • Experience creating product requirement documents, system specifications, use cases or technical interface/API documentation.
  • MS in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics or related discipline.
