Product Definition information

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in product definition, and how can they be effectively managed?

Professionals in Product Definition often encounter challenges such as aligning cross-functional teams around a unified product vision, managing shifting stakeholder priorities, and ensuring user needs are accurately captured. Navigating these challenges typically requires strong communication skills, active stakeholder engagement, and iterative validation of requirements. Establishing clear documentation and leveraging collaboration tools can help streamline the process, ensuring that product goals and user expectations remain at the forefront throughout development.

What is product definition?

Product definition is the process of clearly outlining what a product is, who it is for, and what problems it solves. This involves gathering and analyzing customer needs, market research, and technical requirements to create a detailed description of the product's features, functions, and value proposition. The product definition acts as a blueprint for development teams and stakeholders, guiding the design, development, and launch of the product. It ensures everyone involved has a shared understanding of the product's goals and requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product definition specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Definition Specialist, you need a solid background in product design, requirements gathering, and market analysis, often supported by a degree in engineering, business, or a related field. Familiarity with product lifecycle management (PLM) software, wireframing tools, and technical documentation systems is typically required. Strong communication, attention to detail, and cross-functional collaboration skills set outstanding specialists apart. These competencies ensure that products are accurately defined, meet market needs, and are developed efficiently from concept to launch.

About the Role
We are seeking a highly technical, product-centric Product Marketing Manager to embed directly with Engineering and Product teams supporting Agentforce Public Sector and Missionforce solutions.
This position will operate within the build cycle - partnering closely with engineering to define, name, and structure product capabilities to ensure clarity, consistency, compliance, and alignment with the broader Public Sector narrative.
The ideal candidate is equally fluent in technical architecture, can articulate customer value and product differentiation, and thrives in fast-moving, sprint-driven environments.

  • Own in-product naming conventions, taxonomy, and feature descriptions
  • Translate technical capabilities into clear, differentiated product language
  • Ensure alignment between roadmap, UI copy, documentation, and Public Sector positioning
  • Serve as the connective tissue between Product, Engineering, Security, Compliance, and broader PMM/GTM teams

Key Responsibilities
Embedded Product Partnership
  • Partner daily with Engineering and Product Management in sprint cycles
  • Participate in backlog grooming, roadmap reviews, and release planning
  • Ensure feature naming and in-product language reflect customer use cases and regulatory context

In-Product Naming & Taxonomy
  • Define naming frameworks for features, modules, workflows, and APIs
  • Ensure terminology consistency across Agentforce Public Sector and Missionforce solutions
  • Align internal naming with external Public Sector messaging strategy
  • Prevent technical jargon drift and ensure clarity for Public Sector buyers

Technical Translation & Documentation
  • Translate complex security, compliance, and infrastructure capabilities into clear product descriptions
  • Support technical documentation, release notes, and in-app guidance
  • Partner with UX and design teams on UI copy and feature clarity

Public Sector Alignment
  • Ensure alignment with Public Sector regulatory requirements and mission-driven positioning
  • Incorporate security standards and compliance considerations into product framing
  • Align Agentforce capabilities with Missionforce narrative where appropriate

Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Serve as liaison between Engineering (India-based teams) and Global PMM and Field Marketing teams
  • Provide early insight into roadmap changes that impact messaging or customer positioning
  • Support readiness for future GTM launches by ensuring product definition is solid at the build stage

Qualifications
  • 5-8+ years of experience in Product Marketing, Technical PMM, or Product Management
  • Experience working directly with engineering teams in agile environments
  • Strong understanding of cloud architecture, APIs, and SaaS platforms
  • Experience in regulated industries, Public Sector, or government cloud environments preferred
  • Ability to translate technical language into clear, differentiated product framing
  • Strong written communication and structured thinking skills

Preferred Experience
  • Experience with regulated infrastructure
  • Exposure to AI-driven platforms or automation (Agentforce or similar technologies)
  • Familiarity with security and compliance frameworks relevant to Public Sector
  • Experience working across global teams and time zones

Success Metrics
  • Improved clarity and consistency of in-product naming and taxonomy
  • Reduced rework between Engineering and PMM at the launch stage
  • Alignment between roadmap, UI language, and external positioning
