Job description

Tool Room - Mold Technician

POSITION SUMMARY:

Polytainers’ Molding department produces injection molded plastic food containers using injection molding machines. 

Reporting to the Tool Room Manager, the Mold Technician is responsible for performing product changes, attending to mold issues during production, and preparing molds for upcoming mold changes.  The Mold Technician will also prepare molds for storage after removal from machine and perform maintenance and repairs to existing molds. The Mold Technician will be required to work in the tool room when required.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITES:

 

 Remove Mold During Product Change

·         Pre-Stage all equipment and necessary tools for mold removal

·         Obtain all necessary supplies from stores prior to removing mold

·         Remove mold and all mold accessories from the machine

·         Perform line clearance

·         Prepare the mold to be transported to the tool room

 

 Install Mold During Product Change

·         Pre-Stage Mold at machine

·         Obtain necessary supplies from stores, vendors, or  suppliers prior to installation by placing product orders

·         Install the new mold by following proper procedures

·         Troubleshoot mold issues during installation process

 

 

 Prepare for Storage and Installation

·         Follow the lock out, tag out (LOTO) procedure

·         Inspect the mold out for repairs, tool wear, and damage

·         Perform repairs and clean the mold prior to storage

·         Store the mold in the proper location

·         Inspect, clean, polish the mold prior to installation

 

 

Repair and Improve Injection Molds During Production

·         Troubleshoot molds during production to ensure optimum performance

·         Check mold alignment

·         Split any mold to perform the following:

o   Replace or clean tips

o   Replace gate pads

o   Clean mold (flash)

o   Replace heaters

o   Clean cavity air

·         Block and unblock cavities when the need arises

·         Perform insert change or repairs, clean cores and gate inserts

·         Fix leaking inserts

Perform Routine Preventative Maintenance

·         Replace mold inserts, nozzle tips,

·         Check lubrication points

·         Setting and checking mold alignment

 

Documentation

·         Complete the product change form as molds are changed and rotated

·         Report daily activities and update Tool Room labor board file.

·         Complete a mold Inspection checklist as needed.

 

    

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Educational Requirements: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent  

Minimum Experience/Field: Minimum 2 years related experience in a molding or injection molding facility

Courses Required:

Computer Skills: Good PC skills including working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications

Additional Certificates/Diplomas: College degree or certificate in injection molding, maintenance, or plastics strongly preferred.

Permits Required:

Physical Requirements: Lift, carry, and transport more than 50 pounds; stand, walk, kneel, and crawl for prolonged periods of time; perform repetitive arm and shoulder movements

Communication Skills: Fluent in English with good verbal and written communication skills
