Job description


Under general direction from the Operations Manager or their designate, the Technician is responsible for the laboratory aspects of the day-to-day operations with respect to waste receiving, handling, processing and disposal.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and clean glassware required for sample analysis
  • Perform routine calibration, sample preparation and analyses employing ICP, GC, Oxygen Bomb Calorimeter and other instrumentation
  • Report analytical results and coordinate with production personnel
  • Maintain accurate analysis, maintenance, and production records
  • Complete documentation associated with the applicable provincial and federal regulations and legislation governing the control of and declarations related to incoming and outgoing waste
  • Trouble shoot issues with the laboratory instrumentation
  • Assist other facility operators as needed
  • Assist with the classification of waste materials
  • Perform general laboratory and facility housekeeping duties
  • Assist with discrepancies of incoming and outgoing materials
  • Complete certificates of disposal and summaries of analyses as required
  • Review analytical reports and ensure that outgoing materials meet disposal site parameters
  • Prepare weekly reports summarizing laboratory work volumes and results
  • Monitor laboratory supplies and direct re-supply requests through the assigned internal purchasing personnel
  • Update status of job processes in the internal database
  • Troubleshooting and resolving problems and helping with special projects
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by supervisor


Knowledge, Skills, and Key Competencies:

  • Environmental or Chemical Engineering Technician or Technologist, Chemistry or related Diploma
  • Previous laboratory experience is an asset
  • Competent computer skills (MS Windows and Office)
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Must be motivated, able to multi-task, and work effectively in a team environment
  • Must be safety conscious and detail oriented
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to follow procedures and work with minimal supervision
  • Willing to work overtime, alternate shifts and weekends
