Plant Process Engineer

The Naugatuck Plant Process Engineer is a critical technical resource at the plant and plays a key leadership role across engineering, operations, and EHS. This position is responsible for product and process technical transfer to manufacturing, driving process optimization, leading technical problem-solving, and ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations. The Plant Process Engineer will balance hands-on technical work with cross-functional leadership supporting operations, managing EHS programs, and maintenance.


Responsibilities / Job Functions:

Core Process Engineering

  • Serve as the plantโ€™s subject matter expert for all processes, procedures, and production-related issues.
  • Lead technology transfer from R&D to production.
  • Provide process engineering support for the Naugatuck Plant and tolling operations, including troubleshooting, process optimization, process development, and oversight of the plant DCS.
  • Provide engineering support for capital projects from concept through commissioning.
  • Monitor and improve KPIs such as yield, throughput, energy consumption, and downtime; recommend and implement corrective and continuous-improvement actions.
  • Develop and implement production procedures, work instructions, and associated training.
  • Perform plant operations, in-process testing, and maintenance activities as required.

Operations & Production Support

  • Partner with the Production Manager, supervisors, and operators to ensure safe and efficient day-to-day plant operations.
  • Support management in strategic planning, long-term capacity studies, and capital planning.
  • Develop and deliver training programs for production and maintenance employees.

EHS & Environmental Program Ownership

  • Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of plant safety programs ensuring compliance with OSHA, EPA, and state/local regulatory requirements.
  • Assists in managing compliance programs, including hazardous waste (RCRA) generator-status compliance, waste determinations, manifesting, accumulation and container management, emissions/air permitting support, SPCC, stormwater, and Tier II / SARA (EPCRA) reporting, as applicable to the site.
  • Drive a strong safety culture by leading incident investigations, implementing corrective actions, and reinforcing accountability across the plant.
  • Own emergency planning and incident response programs, including spill response for hazardous materials.
  • Maintain hazard identification and hazard classification of materials and ensure SDS and related documentation are current.
  • Represent the plant in technical and compliance discussions with external partners, auditors, and regulatory agencies.

Maintenance & Quality Support

  • Assist with the development of the plant preventive maintenance program, spare-parts inventory, and maintenance recordkeeping.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of the ISO Quality Management System in daily activities, and ensure plant personnel follow the ISO QMS, FSSC 22000, and EfFCI GMP processes and procedures.


Education and Experience:

  • B.S. or M.S. Degree in Chemical Engineering (or related discipline).
  • 2-5 years hands-on experience in the Chemical Industry preferred.
  • Proven track record of success with process optimization, troubleshooting, and leading improvement initiatives.
  • Strong knowledge of EHS regulations and process safety management (PSM) practices.
  • Experience in a GMP environment.
  • Experience with continuous and batch processing.
  • Experience with regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Experience in hazard identification and hazard classification of materials
  • Experience with instrumentation and process control systems

Physical Demands

  • Position is considered "Medium work", defined as exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Work in both hot and cold environments, plant in not temperature controlled.
  • Must be medically capable of wearing all required personal protective equipment including respirators which will require a clean-shaven face for suitable fit under the OSHA regulations.
