The Opportunity

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Function in a lead wastewater process engineer role as a technical specialist in the areas of conventional wastewater treatment 
  • Use processes such as physical/chemical primary treatment, conventional activated sludge, biological nutrient removal, fixed-film processes, membrane bio-reactors (MBR), sidestream treatment, tertiary filtration, and disinfection
  • Provide technical guidance over a process team, supervise engineering staff on projects, and collaborate with multi-disciplinary design teams to implement complex treatment solutions

Key Responsibilities

Engineering: 

  • Prepares a variety of complex engineering deliverables, including process models, process/mass balance calculations, design criteria/basis of design memoranda, process flow diagrams, P&IDs, tradeoff studies, and master planning studies
  • Typically supports multiple projects simultaneously with complex technical challenges 
  • Serves as a technical specialist with knowledge and skillset providing guidance to project teams in conventional and/or emerging wastewater treatment systems 
  • Performs complex research, including applied research activities involving bench, pilot, and full-scale testing to select or assess performance of treatment processes and incorporating the data into process models
  • Develops recommendations for appropriate treatment processes, equipment and/or materials selection 
  • Oversees collection, assimilation, analysis, and management of data for process modeling and design work  
  • Prepares process models and carries out complex engineering calculations following standard methods and principles  

Client Focus:

  • Responsible for assisting with identification of key client interests and drivers for ongoing projects and new business prospects and may determine the key clients in some instances 
  • Communicates client interests and drivers to project team members and develops creative solutions and approaches to accommodate our clients' goals and objectives 
  • Provides support to business development or pursuit activities, including involvement in pre-positioning meetings, proposal development, client interviews, identification of winning sales messages.
  • Attends and presents on state-of-the-art wastewater treatment projects and thought leadership ideas at local, regional and national conferences

People Management:

  • Actively fosters knowledge management and provides mentoring to junior engineers
  • May assist with performance management process, mentoring, recognition, and any performance improvement actions required for junior engineers
  • Participate in coaching opportunities, career development planning, learning/training, and development of junior staff

Engineering Standards:

  • Provides guidance and direction on department design guides, standards, systems, and applicable engineering codes related to water quality and treatment
  • Assists in developing, maintaining and updating engineering standards  
    Provides technical guidance to others regarding projects and disciplines 

Quality / Continuous Improvement:  

  • Independently applies knowledge and complies with Black & Veatch quality program relative to assigned tasks  
  • May be responsible for ensuring compliance with Black & Veatch quality program  
  • Provides related guidance and direction to others 
  • Supports continuous improvement and change management efforts 
  • Actively coordinates with all other internal/external team members on moderately complex projects 

Resource Management - (budgets, tools, processes, project support): 

  • Implements resource management strategy 
  • Manages engineering resources for small groups 

Administrative: 

  • Ensures policies, procedures, and processes are effectively implemented and communicated for workgroup 
  • Ensures adherence to corporate and division programs 
  • May approve expense reports 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree (Master's or Doctoral) in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering preferred. 
  • 10 years of experience in wastewater water treatment with at least 5 years in water quality and treatment (water quality analysis, treatment evaluations, process design, regulatory compliance assessments, etc.). 
  • Advanced knowledge of process design for treatment of municipal wastewater, engineering design principles and applicable design guides and standards related to assigned engineering discipline 
  • Experience with using modern process simulators such as BioWin, GPS-X, Sumo, and/or Simba#
  • Established leadership skills with deep understanding of consulting, project execution, client services, and business development.
  • Effective written and oral communications, Drive for Results, Priority Setting, Planning, Delegation, Directing Others, Conflict Management, Informing, Listening, Dealing with Ambiguity, And Building Effective Teams
Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing
  • Minimum of 11 years related work experience
  • All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.
Certifications

Professional engineering license from any of the states in the USA or ability to obtain one within 2 years of employment required.
