Job description

Process Engineer II

Location: Birmingham, AL
Pay: DOE

About this Role

We are seeking a Process Engineer II to support the design, development, and execution of process systems for power generation projects, including simple cycle gas turbine installations, combined cycle power plants, and reciprocating engine facilities. This role works closely with senior engineers and project managers to deliver safe, reliable, and efficient process engineering solutions throughout all phases of project execution.

Work Detail

  • Support process engineering activities from conceptual design through detailed engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and startup.
  • Develop and maintain process design basis documents, equipment lists, line lists, and tie-in schedules.
  • Prepare process calculations, equipment datasheets, and technical specifications for procurement packages.
  • Design and support balance-of-plant process systems, including:
    • Demineralized water treatment systems (RO, CEDI, mixed bed)
    • Closed cooling water and service water systems
    • Instrument air and plant air systems
    • Chemical dosing and wastewater handling systems
  • Perform equipment sizing calculations for tanks, vessels, pumps, compressors, and packaged systems.
  • Assist with vessel and tank design in accordance with applicable industry standards, including API 650 and ASME Section VIII.
  • Support process equipment selection and evaluate material compatibility for plant chemicals and operating conditions.
  • Develop, review, and maintain Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Participate in HAZOP studies, design reviews, and interdisciplinary coordination meetings.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, piping, electrical, civil/structural, and environmental teams to ensure integrated project execution.
  • Support environmental permitting activities, emissions estimates, wastewater studies, containment design, and regulatory compliance efforts.
  • Assist with procurement support, vendor document reviews, construction packages, and field engineering activities.
  • Provide commissioning and startup support, including system troubleshooting and performance verification.
  • Conduct field visits and site assessments to support project development and execution.

Preferred Background

  • Bachelorโ€™s or Masterโ€™s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Petroleum Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
  • 2โ€“4 years of industrial process engineering experience within power generation, chemical processing, energy, or EPC environments.
  • Familiarity with gas turbine power generation systems; combined cycle experience is a plus.
  • Experience with process simulation and hydraulic modeling software such as GT PRO, PIPE-FLO, or similar tools.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD Plant 3D and P&ID development preferred.
  • Understanding of process equipment, water treatment systems, utility systems, and applicable industry codes and standards.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary and remote project teams.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites, customer facilities, and field offices as required.
