What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Private Equity Data Science roles?
Professionals in Private Equity Data Science often encounter challenges such as integrating data from various sources, handling incomplete or unstructured data, and communicating complex analyses to non-technical stakeholders. The fast-paced and confidential nature of private equity deals means timelines can be tight and priorities may shift rapidly. Building scalable data solutions and frameworks that can adapt to diverse portfolio companies is also a frequent demand. Despite these challenges, the role offers high visibility within the firm and the opportunity to directly impact investment outcomes.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Private Equity Data Science position, and why are they important?
To thrive in Private Equity Data Science, you need strong analytical abilities, advanced skills in statistical modeling and machine learning, and a solid grounding in finance or economics, typically supported by a quantitative degree. Expertise with data analytics tools like Python, R, SQL, and data visualization software such as Tableau is often required, and certifications like CFA or data science credentials are advantageous. Effective communication, business acumen, and an ability to translate data insights for investment teams are key soft skills. These qualities enable you to drive data-driven investment decisions and add measurable value to private equity firms.

Job description
The Private Equity Data & Reporting Specialist will join our Boston office as a member of the Research Operations team. The position serves as a critical link between the Private Equity Research team, Research Operations and the Client CIO team. This role is designed to ensure that private markets investment insights (across buyout, venture capital, growth equity, private real estate, co-investments, and secondaries) are clearly articulated, internally aligned, and efficiently implemented in client portfolios.
The position is internally focused. The Senior Associate will form the "first line" for inbound inquiries to the private markets research team from client-facing teams, as well as responsibility for working cross-functionally to identify and implement improvements to team deliverables. The role requires knowledge of private markets investing, strong data literacy, the ability to synthesize complex strategies into clear internal messaging, and a collaborative mindset across functions.
The Private Equity Data & Reporting Specialist is expected to develop a deep understanding of Partners Capital's private markets investment philosophy, program structures, and portfolio construction frameworks, while contributing to the continuous improvement of internal communication, decision-making, and execution processes.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Acting as a central point of coordination between Private Markets Research and Client CIO teams to support the efficient implementation of private market investment recommendations including transmission of feedback to the research team and addressing queries from clients and Client CIO team members.
- First-line support for inbound inquiries to the Private Markets research team. Ability to effectively query and synthesize data to support ad-hoc and/or recurring inquiries.
- Close collaboration with the Private Markets Reporting function to ensure fit-for-purpose and timely data, including liaising between research and data functions to close manager data gaps
- Ability to partner with research team members to translate investment considerations into clear, decision-ready materials for client consumption.
- Supporting Client CIOs with quantitative portfolio construction considerations, including pacing, diversification, liquidity profiles, and exposure management.
- Ownership of exposure data in internal systems and obtaining sign-offs for updates where appropriate. Identifying opportunities to improve and/or expand internal data sets and availability through additional fields or data sets.
- Preparation, update and review of investment pipeline, commitments, exposure and track record data to support our private markets program, Board reporting, business development or other uses as needed with a high degree of accuracy and responsiveness.
- Assisting in the preparation of marketing materials and portfolio reporting for use by clients, prospects or the business development team.
- Identifying opportunities to improve internal workflows, documentation, and knowledge sharing related to private markets investments.
- Building strong cross-functional relationships and developing a holistic understanding of the Firm's investment and client service processes.
The Private Equity Data & Reporting Specialist will play a significant role in continued development of the firm's private markets investment program. The Senior Associate is expected to gain exposure to and have a full understanding of our investment process and to develop an understanding of all parts of the business.
Key responsibilities may be assessed and are subject to change from time to time based on the needs of the business. The individual may be required to work overtime as needed.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Responsible for ensuring all information security processes, policies and procedures are adhered to and any issues or concerns are raised with the Cyber Security team
- Ensure full compliance with all local data protection regulations and privacy controls, and any related issues are raised via the appropriate channels
Qualifications / Attributes
Required:
The ideal candidate:
- Has a strong understanding of private markets investment strategies, commitment pacing and quantitative reporting
- Is comfortable synthesizing complex investment concepts and communicating them clearly to internal stakeholders
- Demonstrates high data literacy and a pro-active approach to identifying and closing data gaps to support enhanced reporting
- Highly organized, proactive, and capable of managing multiple workstreams across teams
- Energized by a fast-paced, collaborative environment that requires intellectual curiosity and sound judgment
- Intellectually curious and energized by the prospect of solving business-wide operational challenges
- 4+ years of experience in private markets reporting, analytics, product strategy, portfolio management support, or a related role
- Experience with S&P's iLEVEL or similar private markets reporting platform. Understanding and ability to calculate IRR, multiples, quartiling and other fund-level quantitative assessments
- Experience assessing embedded portfolio exposure and private company operating metrics preferred
- Strong technical acumen, including advanced Excel skills and comfort working with large, complex datasets. Experience building or modifying analytical tools, models, or templates to support portfolio analysis and/or construction is a plus
- Ability to interpret investment, exposure, and portfolio data and translate quantitative outputs into clear, actionable insights for internal stakeholders
