JOB DESCRIPTION


Instructional Assistant—Writing Tutor


Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Library Director, this position provides instructional assistance to students and staff seeking to improve their writing.


Essential Duties


  1. Provides instructional support to students requiring assistance in writing by using coaching techniques. Explains concepts, answers questions, edits, proofreads, and discusses students’ writing, grammar, and methods of documentation.
  2. Suggests methods of improvement in writing in all areas of study.
  3. Orients new students to the Library & Learning Commons, including explaining procedures in writing and research.
  4. Assists students in the use of word-processing tools in preparing written documents.
  5. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as assigned.


Preferred Qualifications


Education and Experience


Associate’s degree or higher in liberal arts or a related field and one or more years of teaching, tutoring, library, learning commons, reception desk or customer service experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Demonstrated knowledge of English grammar and experience in composition and other forms of writing with an understanding of college-level expectations in these areas.
  • Excellent patron service skills.
  • Familiarity with the use of office computers, photocopiers, printers, scanners, etc.
  • Proven ability to prioritize tasks and complete assigned tasks.
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Sensitivity and understanding of the diversity of students found in a community college.


Physical Requirements


Ability to lift up to 20 pounds. Must be able to reach and stoop, grasp materials up to 2 pounds and manipulate them for shelving.
