What does a print production coordinator do?

A print production coordinator is responsible for coordinating the final production of a print product. In this career, your job duties are to review artwork and copy while estimating the cost of materials and negotiating with vendors to design print projects for your organization. These products can include anything from mail promotions to sales collateral. Additional duties include preparing estimates and budgeting, scheduling packaging production phases with designers and suppliers, researching vendors and materials, developing mock-ups, presenting options, approving invoices, and maintaining accuracy on all art files. As this is a manager career, you work with graphic designers, artists, and advertising teams to create ads and act as the head quality control responsible for overseeing the entire print process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a print production coordinator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Print Production Coordinator, you need strong project management skills, attention to detail, and a background in graphic arts or print production, often supported by a relevant degree or experience. Familiarity with print production software (such as Adobe Creative Suite), prepress processes, and print management systems is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and the ability to manage tight deadlines help you collaborate effectively with clients, vendors, and internal teams. These skills are vital to ensure projects are completed accurately, on time, and to client specifications in a fast-paced print environment.

Print Production Coordinators often face challenges such as tight deadlines, last-minute changes to project specifications, and managing communications between multiple stakeholders like designers, printers, and clients. Staying organized and maintaining clear, proactive communication are key to managing these issues. Utilizing project management tools and regularly checking in with vendors can help ensure projects stay on track and any problems are quickly addressed. Developing strong relationships with reliable suppliers and having contingency plans for delays or errors can also make a significant difference.
