Overview:
The Head of Video is an essential creative and strategic role for the future of The Free Press.
This person will oversee the current and future video shows and podcasts from The Free Press, and will also oversee its strategy on social video and video clips. This role will require editorial rigor, management chops, and business strategy. Knowledge of programming for and optimizing YouTube is a requirement. This person should be passionate about the role and mission of The Free Press and have a natural understanding for what a "Free Press story" is and is not.
This role reports to the Deputy Editor and is based in New York City.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Manage the video team, including FTEs and contractors working on all video shows, podcasts, and social clips
  • Guide existing video podcasts and develop, greenlight, and launch new shows, ensuring the editorial direction, guests booked, and look and feel set all up for success on all platforms on which they live (YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, X, LinkedIn, etc.)
  • Implement an efficient clipping strategy geared toward virality
  • Maintain profit-and-loss responsibility for the video organization of The Free Press and set additional measurable KPIs for the organization
  • Serve as a key liaison between department heads, producers, and editors, translating high-level editorial priorities into structured, usable notes that guide the edit
  • Directly oversee the Directors of Production and Post-Production to ensure the final video products are up to the standards of The Free Press from the conception through shoot and delivery of content

Additional Qualifications:
  • Experience working directly with on-camera talent, producers, and editors and shaping their output
  • Fluency with production tools and workflows (e.g., microphones, cameras, Premiere, platforms like Riverside) including emerging AI products
  • Strong post-production sensibility, with the ability to collaborate effectively with editors on pacing, structure, tone, and visual style, while translating stakeholder feedback into clear creative direction
  • Ability to operate at a fast pace, including responding to breaking news outside standard hours when needed

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Hiring Salary Range: $185,000.00 - 200,000.00.
The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York City, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, tuition assistance program and PTO or, if applicable, as otherwise dictated by the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position is bonus eligible.
