To thrive as a Power Marketer, you need a solid understanding of energy markets, risk management, and trading principles, often supported by a degree in finance, economics, or engineering. Familiarity with energy trading platforms, market analysis tools, and relevant certifications such as NERC or FERC compliance is typical. Strong analytical thinking, decision-making under pressure, and effective negotiation and communication skills set top performers apart. These abilities are crucial for ensuring profitable trades, compliance, and successful navigation of dynamic and highly regulated power markets.

What Does a Power Marketer Do?

As a power marketer, your responsibilities include researching and collecting data to assist renewable energy businesses in marketing their available power generation to various private buyers and utility companies. You lead the analysis and implementation of regional trading strategies to maximize asset value while working with management to further improve optimization. You meet with buyers, build working relationships with each, write up proposals while working closely with legal staff, and negotiate utility purchase deals. Other duties include monitoring and forecasting sales trends, measuring the effectiveness of marketing strategies, determining ways to collect and analyze data, preparing reports with your findings, and presenting them to clients or your managers. Power marketers are professionals or companies that buy and sell electricity in wholesale and retail markets.
