How much do power engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 10, 2026, the average yearly pay for power engineering in the United States is $97,305.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $46,500.00 and $133,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Power Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Power Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, power systems analysis, and a relevant engineering degree, often with a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with industry-standard software like ETAP, MATLAB, and SCADA systems, as well as knowledge of grid codes and safety regulations, is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and teamwork are critical soft skills in this field. These competencies ensure reliable power generation and distribution, compliance with safety standards, and successful collaboration on complex engineering projects.

What is the difference between Power Engineering vs Electrical Engineering?

AspectPower EngineeringElectrical Engineering
CertificationsProfessional Engineer (PE), Power Engineering licensesPE, Electrical Engineering licenses
Work EnvironmentPower plants, energy generation, transmissionDesign, electronics, control systems, various industries
Industry UsagePrimarily in energy, utilities, and power sectorsBroadly across electronics, telecommunications, manufacturing

Power Engineering focuses on the generation, transmission, and distribution of electrical power, often working in energy plants and utility companies. Electrical Engineering has a broader scope, including electronics, control systems, and various industries. While both roles require similar certifications and work environments, Power Engineering specializes in power systems, making it ideal for careers in energy and utilities.

What is power engineering?

Power engineering is a branch of electrical engineering that focuses on the generation, transmission, distribution, and utilization of electric power. Power engineers work with systems and equipment that produce and deliver electricity, ensuring that it is reliable and efficient. This field involves designing power plants, managing renewable energy sources, maintaining electrical grids, and improving energy efficiency in various industries. Power engineers play a critical role in supporting modern infrastructure and the transition to sustainable energy solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by power engineers when working on large-scale energy projects?

Power engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, managing tight project timelines, and ensuring compliance with stringent safety and regulatory standards. They must also address technical issues related to grid reliability, integration of renewable energy sources, and evolving technology requirements. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential to navigate these complexities and deliver successful project outcomes.

What engineering jobs pay $500,000?

Power engineering roles at senior levels, such as chief power engineer or energy director, can reach or exceed $500,000 annually, especially in large industrial facilities or energy companies. These positions typically require extensive experience, advanced certifications, and expertise in power systems, grid management, or renewable energy projects.

Job description

Description

As Power Engineering Manager, you will be one of the functional leaders responsible for designing Fervo's innovative power plants. As Fervo moves from engineering first-of-a-kind projects to widespread scaling, you will help drive the facilities team toward a manufacturing mindset, optimizing each subsequent power plant for cost and cycle time.

To be successful in this role, you must possess exceptional technical expertise in the power engineering discipline, and you must demonstrate a highly collaborative approach to working closely with the subsurface and facilities teams. You will report to the Director of Engineering.

Requirements

Responsibilities

Technical and Execution Leadership

  • Own specification generation, design, and analysis of electrical power systems for power generation and surface facilities (power delivery, systems, transmission, distribution, substations, etc.)
  • Drive first-principles tradeoff analysis across power delivery systems to optimize plant performance
  • Identify opportunities to simplify and accelerate designs while maintaining technical excellence
  • Inform and support procurement efforts relating to electrical scopes of power plant designs
  • Clearly communicate technical decisions, risks, and tradeoffs to executive leadership, enabling timely alignment and execution
  • Collaborate with cross-functional leaders beyond the engineering function to educate stakeholders and ensure electrical system priorities support overall project goals

Team and Culture

  • Recruit, coach, and manage a world-class team of 6-8 electrical engineers
  • Instill a culture of extreme ownership - where engineers own cost, safety, and constructability, not just design
  • Encourage rapid iteration, bias for speed, and resilience under pressure
  • Foster collaboration across disciplines (process, mechanical, I&C, rotating equipment) and with external partners
  • Lead a team executing across multiple challenging and diverse technical workstreams, balancing near-term delivery with long-term scalability
  • Support leadership in setting priorities, sequencing work, and making informed decisions across competing project demands

Qualifications

  • B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
  • 8+ years of experience in electrical engineering in large capital projects
  • Proven track record leading and developing high-performing engineering teams
  • Deep expertise in power delivery & systems, transmission, distribution, and substations
  • Strong communication and leadership skills; ability to translate technical complexity into clear decisions

Location

Fervo Energy is headquartered in Houston, TX, with growing offices in Golden, CO, Reno, NV, and Oakland, CA, and Salt Lake City, UT. This position will be eligible for some hybrid work flexibility, but regular in-office presence at the Oakland, CA office will be required.

Compensation & Benefits

Fervo provides a comprehensive suite of benefits including medical, dental, vision, life, short-term and long-term disability, flexible paid time off, and paid parental leave. Additionally, Fervo offers an incentive stock options program, a bonus incentive program, and a 401(k) plan with an employer match.ย

Fervo Energy is providing the compensation range and general description of other compensation and benefits that the company in good faith believes it might pay and/or offer for this position based on the successful applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities in addition to internal equity and geographic location. Expected Salary: $180,000-$240,000 based on California locality, pay in other locations may vary.

Fervo Energy reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant's sex or other status protected by local, state, or federal law.ย
