What is the difference between Portfolio Manager vs Financial Analyst?
| Aspect | Portfolio Manager | Financial Analyst |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Typically CFA, CFP, or similar certifications | Often CFA, CPA, or relevant finance degrees |
| Work Environment | Investment firms, asset management companies, banks | Corporations, investment banks, consulting firms |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Focus on managing investment portfolios for clients or firms | Focus on analyzing financial data to support investment decisions |
While both roles require strong financial knowledge and certifications like CFA, Portfolio Managers primarily oversee investment portfolios and make strategic decisions, whereas Financial Analysts focus on analyzing data to inform those decisions. The roles often work closely but differ in scope and responsibilities.

Job description
The Director, Strategic Customer Portfolio Management serves as the General Manager for a portfolio of the company's largest and most strategic power infrastructure customers, including hyperscale data centers and other large-load accounts.
This leader owns the full financial performance, customer relationship, and execution outcomes for assigned customer portfolios, with accountability for revenue growth, margin performance, capital investment optimization, and long-term value creation.
Acting as the single point of accountability, the Director leads the translation of customer contracts into successful infrastructure delivery by coordinating construction, engineering, operations, finance, and commercial teams. This role has decision-making authority to balance customer commitments, capital deployment, operational readiness, schedule, and risk while protecting portfolio economics and ensuring exceptional customer outcomes.
The ideal candidate combines executive-level customer leadership, strong commercial and P&L management experience, and the ability to lead complex, infrastructure-driven programs for some of the company's largest and most visible customers.
Key Responsibilities
Portfolio and Financial Leadership
Own full P&L accountability for assigned large-load customer portfolios, including revenue, costs, capital deployment, profitability, and long-term value creation.
Drive financial performance by optimizing contract economics, execution efficiency, and customer outcomes.
Evaluate and make strategic tradeoff decisions involving cost, schedule, scope, and risk to protect portfolio value.
Identify opportunities for contract optimization, customer growth, load expansion, and incremental revenue generation.
Customer Leadership
Serve as the primary executive contact for assigned customers throughout the entire contract lifecycle.
Build and maintain strong customer relationships through proactive communication, issue resolution, and expectation management.
Lead regular business reviews, performance discussions, and strategic planning sessions with customer stakeholders.
Ensure customer commitments are met while maintaining alignment with business and operational objectives.
Contract and Commercial Management
Translate contractual obligations into coordinated execution plans across internal teams.
Support contract negotiations, amendments, renewals, and commercial modifications to ensure alignment with operational capabilities and financial goals.
Monitor contract performance and compliance with regulatory, contractual, and governance requirements.
Manage risks and escalations that may impact customer commitments, financial performance, or execution success.
Cross-Functional Execution Leadership
Lead the end-to-end execution of customer commitments across construction, engineering, operations, finance, billing, and support functions.
Act as the decision-maker and escalation point for resolving cross-functional conflicts and competing priorities.
Ensure alignment between customer requirements, infrastructure readiness, operational capabilities, and commercial objectives.
Drive accountability for performance, milestones, and execution outcomes across functional teams.
Team Leadership
Lead and develop a team of business analysts, project managers, and customer origination professionals.
Foster collaboration across a matrixed organization and leverage subject matter expertise from across the enterprise.
Create a culture of accountability, customer focus, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering, Finance, Energy Management, or a related field.
8+ years of experience in utility, energy, industrial, infrastructure, commercial operations, portfolio management, account management, or related leadership roles.
Demonstrated success leading customer portfolios, programs, or contracts with direct responsibility for financial and operational performance.
Experience owning or influencing P&L outcomes, business case economics, budgeting, profitability, and capital investment decisions.
Strong understanding of utility contracts, large-load customer requirements, infrastructure delivery, and regulatory considerations.
Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence outcomes in complex, matrixed environments.
Strong customer-facing leadership experience managing senior-level stakeholder relationships.
Exceptional communication, negotiation, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Ability to balance competing priorities while managing risk, customer commitments, and business objectives.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA), Engineering, Energy Management, or a related field.
Experience serving as a portfolio, program, business unit, or customer delivery leader with accountability across commercial, operational, financial, and customer functions.
Experience supporting large-load customers such as data centers, advanced manufacturing, industrial facilities, semiconductor operations, or other energy-intensive customers.
Experience leading infrastructure-driven programs, capital projects, or complex customer implementations.
This is an opportunity to serve as the business leader for some of our most strategic customer relationships. You will have direct influence on customer satisfaction, portfolio profitability, infrastructure execution, and long-term growth while partnering with senior leaders across the organization and helping shape the future of large-load customer solutions.
