SUMMARY
This is professional and supervisory work directing temporary employees engaged in recreation activities and programs, environmental education programs and/or athletic programs, including aquatics and golf.
Positions allocated to this class report to a designated supervisor and work under general supervision. Work in this class is distinguished from other classes by its supervisory and administrative responsibilities of a temporary nature.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Depending on area of assignment:
Schedules, supervises, plans and coordinates work of assigned temporary employees; ensures adequate coverage at assigned locations.
Monitors parent groups, parent boards or other private or non-profit entities that offer recreational programs at City facilities.
Enforces safety and operating procedures including compliance with health, safety and building codes.
Handles administrative details, plans and assists in the coordination and implementation of organized recreation activities, special events, environmental education programs and/or athletic programs, including aquatics and golf.
Creates periodic and special reports; maintains accurate records of programs, materials, supplies, and equipment purchases.
Must be familiar with and stay current on state standards relating to curriculum and testing to ensure accuracy of information taught within programs.
Must have an understanding of the principles of interpretation and environmental education and be familiar with nature-based programming, including live animal exhibits and exhibition plantings.
May instruct individuals and groups in rules of games, skill development, educational programming, and safety and/or present public programs.
Performs site program criteria evaluations, takes notes, provides feedback to assigned staff and follow-ups with supervisor.
Answers public inquiries about programs. Assists in the evaluation of programs and makes recommendations for modifications and improvements.
Opens and closes park and recreation facilities and buildings, according to schedule and procedures.
Oversees facility and program safety and risk management.
Schedules and coordinates assigned staff. Supervises assigned staff in absence of a Supervisor.
Maintains facility, equipment and supply inventory; keeps all equipment and supplies in good working condition; and / or cares for livestock and crops.
Assists with selection, promotion, discharge, and recommends other appropriate personnel actions. Assists with pre-employment testing and training of staff.
Assists in the training of water safety personnel.
Keeps all equipment in good operating condition.
Maintains assigned facility in clean and sanitary conditions at all times. Keeps trash and litter picked up in and around the assigned facility. Reports damage and/or needed maintenance and repairs to the designated supervisor.
Ensures chemicals are balanced within state and local guidelines at all times and they are checked at least every two hours. Records all readings and measurements in the Daily Pool Log.
Performs Lifeguard duties a minimum of five (5) hours per week; teaches a minimum of one (1) swim lesson per season; and attends required in-service trainings scheduled by the designated supervisor.
Attends work on a continual and regular basis.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Conducts routine maintenance tasks at parks facilities and buildings.
Prepares recreational facilities for classes, meetings, events and activities; may include setting up chairs and tables, moving furniture and equipment.
May transport participants and/or staff, depending upon assignment and work location.
Performs other related duties as assigned by designated supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job function satisfactorily. Below are the required education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Depending on area of assignment:
Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in recreational programming, instruction, management or related activities; or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
For Aquatics, graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma and a minimum of two (2) seasons of aquatic experience.
CERTIFICATIONS OR LICENSES
Licenses
Valid Florida Driver License required upon hire.
Certifications
General (all areas):
American Red Cross certification (or equivalent) in adult, child and infant Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid is required upon appointment.
Depending on area of assignment:
American Red Cross Lifeguard (LG) is required.
American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) is preferred.
American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) is preferred
American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) or Water Safety Instructor (WSI), required within first year.Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) is preferredCertified Youth Sports Administrator (CYSA) is preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of pool filtration systems (sand) and pool water chemistry.
Knowledge of principles, practices, methods and materials, and theories of recreation programs and activities.
Knowledge of materials, tools, and equipment associated with leading athletic, recreation programs and activities.
Knowledge of animal husbandry and plant cultivation.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and accident prevention methods in assigned area of responsibility.
Knowledge of Florida history and Florida natural history.
Knowledge of principles of interpretation and be familiar with nature based programming including live animal exhibits.
Knowledge of principles and methods of water safety and aquatic recreation programming.
Knowledge of swimming pool maintenance practices and methods, including water chemistry applications.
Ability to train and supervise aquatic staff, including teaching required certifications.

Work requires physical strength and agility sufficient to safely perform all essential job functions, including the ability to lift, carry, push or pull 50 pounds without assistance.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position requires a flexible work schedule and may require working a varying schedule, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, and holidays.
Must be able to work or attend meetings outside regular business hours, including weekends and holidays.
Work may require the performance of tasks outdoors under varying environmental conditions including heat, humidity, and biting insects/other invertebrates.
Work requires the ability to work safely with hazardous chemicals, including but not limited to: water treatment, gasoline, motor oil, household cleaning, maintenance chemicals, fertilizer, and pesticides.
