What is a PMO Lead?

A PMO lead is a project management professional who is responsible for monitoring, reporting, and overseeing projects or accounts at a company or organization. A PMO lead works within the project management office (PMO) and provides guidance and support to executives, project managers, and staff. As a PMO lead, your duties may involve tracking the status of projects, monitoring for adherence to PMO standards, and handling financial reports. To pursue a career as a PMO lead, you typically need at least a bachelor’s degree in business or a related field and extensive work experience in a similar role. Some employers prefer candidates with a master’s degree and professional certification. Additional qualifications include excellent interpersonal and managerial skills, as well as proven expertise in project management.

What does a PMO Lead do?

A PMO Lead plays a crucial role in supporting project managers by establishing standardized processes, templates, and best practices that enhance project delivery consistency. They often provide guidance, training, and oversight, ensuring projects align with organizational goals and governance standards. Additionally, the PMO Lead facilitates communication between project teams and executive stakeholders, helping to resolve issues, manage risks, and track progress across multiple projects. This collaborative environment enables project managers to focus on execution while maintaining alignment with overall business objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PMO Lead?

To thrive as a PMO Lead, you need expertise in project management methodologies, portfolio oversight, and strong analytical skills, typically supported by a degree in business or related fields and certifications like PMP or PRINCE2. Familiarity with project management software such as Microsoft Project, Jira, or Clarity PPM is also essential. Excellent leadership, stakeholder management, and communication skills help drive project teams and align organizational goals. These skills ensure effective project delivery, risk mitigation, and strategic alignment across programs within the organization.

What is the difference between Pmo Lead vs Project Coordinator?

AspectPmo LeadProject Coordinator

Work EnvironmentStrategic planning, overseeing multiple projects, stakeholder communicationSupporting project teams, scheduling, tracking project tasks
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in large organizations, IT, finance, constructionUsed across various industries for project support roles

The Pmo Lead focuses on strategic oversight and managing project portfolios, requiring advanced certifications and experience. In contrast, the Project Coordinator handles day-to-day project support tasks, with less emphasis on strategic planning. Both roles are essential but differ in scope and responsibilities.

Is Pmo Lead higher than project manager?

A PMO Lead typically holds a higher strategic and leadership position than a project manager, overseeing multiple projects and aligning them with organizational goals. While project managers focus on individual project execution, PMO Leads manage the project management office, set standards, and coordinate resources across projects.

Job description

Req ID: 387591

NTT DATA strives to hire exceptional, innovative and passionate individuals who want to grow with us. If you want to be part of an inclusive, adaptable, and forward-thinking organization, apply now.

We are currently seeking a PMO Lead to join our team in Los Angeles, California (US-CA), United States (US).

NTT DATA is seeking a PMO Lead to support the LAUSD AWS Transformation Migration program in Los Angeles, California. This client-facing role requires a highly organized delivery leader with strong technical understanding of AWS cloud migration, infrastructure modernization, application migration planning, security, networking, dependency management, and operational transition. The ideal candidate must have a proven record of success leading complex technology programs, building trust with customer stakeholders, communicating clearly with executives and technical teams, and making sound, timely decisions in high-pressure situations where issues must be assessed quickly and resolved without losing delivery momentum.

This role is based in Los Angeles, California and requires the resource to be in the LAUSD office two to three days per week, with onsite participation in customer meetings, governance sessions, technical workshops, and other program-related activities as required.

In this role you will be responsible for:

  • Lead PMO activities for the LAUSD AWS Transformation Migration program, including governance, integrated planning, workstream coordination, schedule management, risk tracking, issue resolution, and executive status reporting.
  • Coordinate across LAUSD stakeholders, NTT DATA delivery teams, AWS architects, application owners, infrastructure teams, security teams, operations teams, vendors, and third-party partners to maintain alignment and accountability.
  • Develop and maintain integrated migration plans, dependency logs, RAID logs, decision logs, cutover plans, status dashboards, and executive-ready program materials.
  • Partner with AWS architects and technical leads to track application readiness, infrastructure readiness, security requirements, migration waves, data dependencies, testing plans, cutover activities, and post-migration stabilization.
  • Facilitate program governance meetings, technical working sessions, customer briefings, risk reviews, migration readiness reviews, steering committee preparation, and onsite customer meetings at LAUSD locations as required.
  • Provide confident, fact-based communication when urgent decisions are required, including clearly presenting options, impacts, risks, tradeoffs, and recommended actions.
  • Serve as a customer-facing escalation point for schedule conflicts, technical blockers, dependency gaps, migration risks, and cross-team coordination issues.
  • Drive accountability across matrixed teams while maintaining a professional, calm, transparent, and solution-oriented approach with LAUSD leadership and delivery stakeholders.
  • Support operational transition activities, including runbook readiness, support model alignment, SLA/KPI expectations, knowledge transfer, escalation procedures, and handoff to managed services operations.

Required Experience:

  • 10+ years of experience leading complex technology programs, cloud transformation initiatives, infrastructure modernization efforts, application migrations, or large-scale IT delivery programs, with a proven record of successful outcomes.
  • 5+ years of experience in PMO leadership, program management, delivery governance, or portfolio coordination within matrixed enterprise environments.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Business, Engineering, Management Information Systems, or a related field preferred; equivalent professional experience will be considered.
  • Availability to work onsite at the LAUSD office in Los Angeles, California two to three days per week and participate onsite in customer meetings, workshops, and program governance sessions as required.

Preferred Experience:

  • Hands-on technical understanding of AWS cloud migration concepts, including landing zones, networking, identity and access management, security controls, compute, storage, databases, application dependencies, migration waves, testing, and cutover planning.
  • Experience supporting public-sector, education, government, or highly regulated clients where governance, compliance, stakeholder management, and executive communications are critical.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with technical architects, engineers, business stakeholders, customer executives, vendors, and operations teams in a clear and credible manner.
  • Proven ability to make quick, sound decisions under pressure by assessing facts, identifying risks, escalating appropriately, and recommending practical recovery actions.
  • Experience developing executive status reports, migration dashboards, integrated schedules, RAID logs, dependency trackers, action item registers, and formal governance documentation.
  • PMP certification preferred; AWS, Agile, ITIL, infrastructure, cloud, or security-related certifications are strongly preferred.

Skills and Candidate Attributes:

  • Strong technical credibility with the ability to understand AWS migration sequencing, application dependencies, infrastructure readiness, security impacts, network constraints, operational support needs, and customer risk considerations.
  • Customer-facing presence with the ability to represent NTT DATA professionally in onsite and remote meetings with LAUSD leadership, technical teams, project stakeholders, and vendor partners.
  • Ability to think quickly, remain calm under pressure, and make practical decisions when faced with urgent issues, conflicting inputs, incomplete information, or time-sensitive migration events.
  • Excellent facilitation, communication, negotiation, conflict-resolution, meeting management, and follow-through skills.
  • Ability to create structure in ambiguous environments, drive accountability, and maintain disciplined documentation across fast-moving migration workstreams.
  • Comfortable working in a high-pressure delivery environment where customer confidence, AWS migration timelines, technical blockers, security requirements, and vendor coordination must be managed simultaneously.
  • Experience supporting K-12 education, large public-sector clients, or enterprise environments with complex governance, procurement, security, and stakeholder communication requirements is a plus.

Where required by law, NTT DATA provides a reasonable range of compensation for specific roles. The starting pay range for this role is $117,232 - $195,388. This range reflects the minimum and maximum target compensation for the position across all US locations. Actual compensation will depend on a number of factors, including the candidate’s actual work location, relevant experience, technical skills, and other qualifications. This position may also be eligible for incentive compensation based on individual and/or company performance.

This position is eligible for company benefits including medical, dental, and vision insurance with an employer contribution, flexible spending or health savings account, life and AD&D insurance, short and long term disability coverage, paid time off, employee assistance, participation in a 401k program with company match, and additional voluntary or legally-required benefits.
