Job description

Job Summary
Playground Leaders are the direct service provider of the Playground program. Leaders assist in daily playground operations at assigned playgrounds including the recruitment, engagement, and safety of playground participants.
Position Summary
  • Understand and abide by all policies and procedures outlined in the Part-Time Employee Manual.
  • Enforce all Milwaukee Public Schools and Milwaukee Recreation policies and rules.
  • Understand and abide by all policies and procedures outline in the Playground Staff Manual.
  • Lead and engage participants in a variety of games, sports, arts, and contests.
  • Assist in ensuring a safe and friendly playground.
  • Assist in the execution of emergency procedures and report all incidents/accidents immediately.
  • Actively promote and recruit participants for the playground program and field trips.
  • Actively assist "roving" staff who are on site providing additional activities for participants.
  • Coach various sports teams as necessary.
  • Complete all required paperwork/reports accurately and on a timely basis.
  • Assist in the facilitation of the Summer Meals program.
  • Assist/Mentor Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board (MAWIB) youth workers.
  • Inventory and maintain all equipment and retain all non-consumable supplies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervision Required
Works under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor and Playground Resource.
Job Requirements
  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Able to meet the scheduling needs required for this position.
  • Access to reliable transportation.
  • Able to lift up to 40lbs continuously.

Preferred Experience
  • Previous work experience in a public setting with a diverse population.
  • Experience organizing and/or leading sports, arts & crafts, dance, and/or drama activities.
  • CPR/First Aid training/certification.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Ability to effectively communicate with participants, parents, and staff.
  • Ability to foster positive working relationships.
  • Excellent decision making skills and ability to carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to participate interactively with a diverse group of youth in all playground activities.
  • Ability to work with groups of 20 or more youth at a time.

Working Environment
This environment includes walking, climbing, standing for long periods of time, and possible loud noises when exposed to activities in the gym or similar environment. Staff will be required to supervise groups of children and adults as well as assist in the accommodation of children and/or adults with disabilities (within parameters of provided training).
